Hi All --
I'm new to the group, so please point me in the correct direction if this has already been covered. I saw other similar items posted but I didn't see the same problem.
I have a 2002 Explorer XLT 4.0L. I started having a transmission issue shifting from 4th to 5th around 45-50 mph. It would experience a shudder. It took me a awhile to recognize it since it feels like I was just going over a bad stretch of road. I have 56k miles on it and decided to have it flushed at the dealership (I remember a 95 Grand Marquis having a similar problem). However, after charging me $150, I still have the same shudder. Anyone got a clue on this? I plan on speaking with the Ford house 1st thing tomorrow so any help as soon as possible would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

There are quite a number of the 2002 on explorers having shifting issues with the transmissions. A lot of them need new shift solenoids to fix the problem. Some problems can be fixed with the tranny in the car, others can only be fixed after pulling the trans.
If its a warranty issue, make sure the service writer puts the symptoms down just like you described them above. In some cases the documentation becomes important. Some people have no problems getting the issue fixed, with others it becomes an extended issue of going back to the dealer numerous times.
Even tho many people are having issues on these trannys, there is no recall on them as its not a safety issue.
Good luck!

Sounds like I'm SOL since it is way past warranty. Any idea what each scenario might run in terms of price?

I am no auto trans expert - it may be possible to repair it with some new solenoids or valve body work. Figure maybe 500 to 800 for repairs.
A remanufactured tranny seems to go for 1,800 to 2,500 depending on who does the work and the warranty.
Many people stay away from aamco, but a second opinion never hurts.
If they say you need a new trans, you have to balance the cost of a good warranty against your driving habits. Many warranties are 3/36, but if you drive a lot, it makes no sense to pay extra for that if you hit the mileage limits in 12 -18 months.
Since it is not a serious problem, take your time researching options. Some people just trade em off at this point.

I'm new here too, and just was trying to research our mountaineer transmission issues because I'm so frustrated. We bought ours in 2003 with 38,000 miles on it. It is a 2002 model. Immediately I noticed that I could hear it shifting between gears, which our old '97 Explorer never did. Within 4 months, we brought it in before our warranty expired. The dealer did a "transmission pack", or something like that, and it seemed to quiet the transmission for awhile. However, almost as soon as the warranty was up, the problems came back worse than ever. It takes 10 seconds to shift into reverse, and sometimes I'm not sure when I'm accelerating if the gears are going to catch. Now the dealer tells us that it is going to have to be completely rebuilt - at a cost of $4200. It was news to me that this was a common problem with explorers and mountaineers until the dealer told me - in fact Ford is forking over a big part of the bill, and the dealer is going to eat some too. We will have to pay $1600 of it. I question why they didn't catch it before our warranty expired - I feel like they put a band-aid on the problem to get us beyond the warranty period - but we're at their mercy. I loved my Explorer, and I'm just so dissappointed to know that Ford won't acknowledge that they blew it with these models, and reimburse their customers accordingly. On top of it all, our family of five is going to have to squeeze into my husband's compact car when we head out to Cape Cod tomorrow for our vacation - a constant reminder on vacation of our transmission woes.
