97 blower motor problem

I was driving my 97 tahoe the other day and started to smell a burning smell. It smelt like tranny fluid so I stopped and got out. I couldn't smell it anymore so when I got back in I noticed my fan wasn't working on any speeds. As I drove farther the fan came back on with only certain speeds like high when the switch showed off. Then the burning smell came back. That happened a few times for a day or two and now it doesn't work at all. I tried hooking the fan direct to the battery and it worked so it doesn't seem to be the motor. I also tried a new risistor and that didn't help. Any ideas???

Check the fan switch and plug that plugs into it. I experienced a similar problem and when I checked it ,it had gotten so hot that it melted the switch and plug together. I replaced both and it works fine now. The cost was $21 for switch and $44 for new plug with heavier wires. Job was pretty easy, Cut out old plug and solder new one in. Make sure to draw a color code map of where existing wires go, as ne plug wires are all white. Hope this helps, I do not know if chev just used unter sized wire in the first place or if there is a deeper problem.
