Stalling Problem

I recently was on a day trip that took me on a 2 hour drive away from home in my 90 Limited. This was all highway driving except getting on and off of the highway. When I got near my desitination and onto regular streets, as I encountered stop lights and signs, the car's rev's would bottom out and it would stall when I took my foot off the accelerator. Once the car cooled down/sat for an hour or so and I continued city type driving it was fine. It behaved the exact same on the way home. Getting to either destination once off the highway was like driving a standard with one foot on the brake and the other on the accelerator so I could keep the rev's above 500 rpm to keep it from stalling.

Sounds like your TCC is not disengaging.

Could you be a little more specific of what the TCC exactly is and what it does? Thanks

The (TCC) or torque converter clutch, is engaged by a solenoid inside the transmission when the vehicle speed is correct for engagement. (Usually around 50 mph). It should disengage at around 30 mph or when applying brake to stop. If it does not disengage, the car will react like it is still in gear with clutch engaged on a straight shift car just like you described. You can disable the TCC function by unplugging the (VSS) vehicle speed sensor and drive it for awhile to see if the problem goes away. Do not continue to drive for long periods with the TCC & VSS disabled, the trans depends on the TCC lock-up to circulate all the fluid for cooling. With this circuits disabled, you only circulate about 60% of the fluid, resulting in overheating! You either have a sticking solenoid or no command to disengage. Since you said it only does it when hot, I would suspect the solenoid is sticking. Replace the TCC solenoid.

Is this something a do it yourselfer can do? If so is it relatively simple or hard?
