hi, new here and did some searching but didnt come up with this scenario, so:
weve had our venture for a little over a year and when we bought it, the dealer gave us two keys, one with the black plastic around it, and one without.
my wife lost the key with the black plastic around it this week, so we went to use the spare, but to our surprise, it wouldnt start the van. it would do everything else (lock/unlock, turn on radio/power windows etc...). did some googling and come to find out that our key that was lost had a chip in it that the car recognizes to start (im sure youre all very well aware of this). i called our nearest dealer and they said that it would cost $70 for the key, $70 to reprogram the van to use the new key, plus we will have to pay to have it towed to the dealer to get all of this done.
is there anything we can do? (bypass security, buy a cheaper key somewhere else, do it ourselves, yada yada yada)
i cant stand the thought of spending $200 for a new key!
please give me some good news!
thanks for your help in advance

Some good news - keys can be obtained on eBay for a reasonable price (typically around $20). Look for Pass-Key 3 (or Pass-key III).
I seem to recall from my service manual, that programming "another" keys is easy, but I don't know what the steps are if you don't have a "good" key already. I will have to look that up.
If someone else has that information handy, they can chime in.
Take Care,

thanks for the reply, im think im about to order one of those keys and give it a shot. ive got a non chip dupe that will do everything but start the car, so i guess i can take that to the key shop and have the new chipped blank cut from that. crossing my fingers!

if it is a pass 3 key its easy to reprogram. just make sure you have a good battery. put the key in and turn the van on, a security light will come on and stay on for 10 min or so. when the security light goes out turn the key off and wait 10 sec and repeat the process 2 more times. after you wait 10sec the third time start the van, the key should be programed
hope this helps
