It just died
88bronco

I was towing my boat today and my 88 bronco just died, just as I was shifting into 4th. When I turn the key to "on", I hear what I'm assuming to be the fuel pump relay (drivers side firewall) but hear no pump. Haven't checked for spark yet. It's miles from anywhere so I'm trying to avoid the cost of towing it 70 miles and repair.....I need to fix it myself. Has anyone experianced something like this with their Bronco. It's the 300-6 with 183,000 miles on it

Listen, You hear a click and only one click when you turn the key on, right. And if the engine doesn't turn over, it's the solenoid. On an 88 bronco, it doesn't run on electric fuel injection, It's drived by the cam. Well, anyway the solenoid is a switch designed to handle a load of power activated by a small power load. You can put 3 volts in a switch to activate it and have 120 volts passing through, take away the 3 volts and everything stops. If it just died while driving it, check the coil, it might be burnt out. The coil is what gives the spark plugs their power.
There could be a number of things wrong. Saftey switches, coil, solenoid, distributor, alternator!.

Sounds like a bad TFI module. First thing would be check for spark. If you got spark, check to hear the fuel pump prime the system when switched in the ON position. If you dont hear the fuel pump prime in the tank, then try replacing the furl pump relay first. If the relay is no help, it looks like your dropping your tank to change out a fuel pump...Keep us updated...
