Overheating Civic....

k i just did a search for overheating civics and i found some answers i was lookin for...but the question i have now is, my car was overheating after 10 mins of drivin, so i changed the head gasket, checked the thermostat, checked the fan(it wasn't on after it got into the red zone, i cut the wires connected them to the battery fan came on, so right now i'm about to go put this fan switch in, but the guy at the partsource said he wasn't to sure if what i bought was a fan switch, it's looks like it screws into something and what sticks out is a bolt part and a lil 2-3 cm part that sticks out, and im just wonderin if this is the fan switch, or sensor? and how do i go about checkin to see if my water pump is shot?
K update, i started the car up and i let it idle and the temp gauge needle stayed in one spot, untill i revved the engine, then it went up and stayed up. ALSO when it the temp got up there, i checked the hoses that were comin from the Rad, and the hose that coems from the bottom to the thermostat was cold, and it didn't feel like anything flowed thru, but the top hose was hot as hell, which brings up another question, with my 1992 honda civic DX, am i able to take the thermostat out completely and leave it out till winter and just let the coolant flow? i couldn't find out where that lil fan switch i got goes, i don't see anywhere or anything that remotely resembles it, so what i'm gonna do is get my camera and take some pictures and post them on here later on tonight...which would help a lil bit if i get any replies..

I would give the water pump a check. Look under and around it to see if it's leaking any water. It might already be empty too. I do know that if there's a whining sound from it that the bearings are going bad. I guess that's all I have on that. Good luck.

If your bottom hose is cold and your overheating it is your thermostat, since you took it out and your car is running fine there should be no clog. Hook your fan back up and go get an OEM thermostat at a dealership. Its only about 15

I work at autozone, which doesn't say much, been there only 3 months and i know that only a few people there should be there.... i have heard of people by passing heater control valves, and even the thermostats, as long as you have it back on before it get too cold, i think you're ok. Don't quote me on that though. Good luck.

Hey guys thanks for the Replies... but i got it working last weekend... I am just thinking it was the fan switch/sensor.. that's the only thing i changed and did a rad flush and now it's workin fine.. the temp gauge does go up but comes back down, although the temp that i see on the dash is higher than my dad's civic.. but i'm gonna get a shop to take a quick look at it to make sure that i did everything right and other than that, it's back and insured and i'm gonna take it for a longer test run tonight after school...
