take the cat out and it will sound like CRAP. You are always going to hear the engine "drown". my 88 has a 350, w/true 3" duels all straight out the back, no muffler or converters. LOUD AS HELL, SOUNDS GREAT. I still hear my engine over my exhaust.

i have a 91 4.3 w/ a single in dual out flowmaster (no cat) sounds great, i have turndowns right off the muffler (resonates the sound under the bed n makes it even louder), at idle has the serious sound of a v8 and cruising sounds really good too, ive had people want to race askin if i had a 350, (also had a cop pull me over and make me pop my hood cause he didnt believe me that i had a v6) if u can get by with no cat i would seriously suggest this, i have 2 inch pipes, the inlet on the muffler is 2.5 inches but they flanged it out to make it fit, if u run pipes too big on a v6 it sounds like shit cause theres to much air to fill before it exits, my friend has strait pipes after his cat and has the same motor, mine is louder than his and has more of a rumble at idle, hes considering gettin what i have

you can try a y pack with short tips, 15 inches or so. I have this set up and it sounds great, loud enough to drown the engine, but not enough to sound like a 6 to bad
