what is the trick to changing a headlamp looks like a lot of stuff to remove just for a burnt out light

It's not too bad. You have to remove the shroud, and then pull in-towards engine / up on the 2 metal clips holding in each lamp assembly. After you get it loose, you can then remove the lights from the back.
