Road Kill

Was driving home day before yesterday, my 80 mod. diesel Rabbit hesitated slightly, I heard a "boomp", and it died like the key had been cut off. It had been running fine until then, starting well and running strong.

Does anyone have any ideas on thing I should check or steps to trouble shoot to find the cause?
