Shifting Gear In A 96 Corolla

Hey guys, this is my second or third post here (can't remember), so bare with me.
I am 17 and got my permit a couple of months ago. I love to drive and hopefully learn how to drive a manual soon. But can't wait.
My mom has a 1996 Corolla (Automatic) and I was driving it the other day and while we was waiting at a signal light I was looking down at the shifter, and it got me thinking. There is an L (Low), 2 (2nd Gear) and D (Drive). I know the "L" is first gear, the "2" is second gear and "D" is 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th gear.
What I want to know is, is it ok to shift through every single one, while driving everyday?
And what are the speed limits per each gear? (Ex: "L" -- Max 30 km\h, etc)
Because what I plan to do is start at "L" for first gear, then "2" for 2nd gear, then "D" for 3rd, and 4th gear.
Would that be ok to do on regular bases? Or would that somehow harm the car or the trany?
I would appreciate all suggestions, and comments, and if you can't answer, thanks for stopping by.

why not let it in the "D" and just drive... it's pretty poitless to do a car that wont accelerate much faster anyways..

Hi I have a 96 Corolla too and as odd as that might sound i race in SOLO2 with it. and dont let anyone tell you anything about the cars power. I too wish that i had more power but i regularly kick Scion TC's asses and if u dont know the Scion TC has times and a half the power. and just like u i have the automatic but i shift into L and 2 regularly. till now the car has not given me any problems but that does not say that it is not bad for the tranny, the only thing it could harn would be the tranny or maybe the ECU cause u r overriding the ECU by going into L or 2. do not shift into 2nd going 60 miles/h on a regular basis cause the engine has to kick in hard and the cluch sometimes spins. i have finally got it right so the clutch doesnt spin but it might still be bad for the tranny. and about the limits. i know this because for one od the Auto-x's i had to ride the rev-limiter just to stey in the power band and it was pointless to shift cause the next turn was right around the carner and i had to break for it. so for L the limit is about 45Miles/h and the second gear i am not sure cause i havent tried to hit the rev-limiter but i think it is around 70-75 miles/h. something u should know if u try to shift into L while u have the accel pressed all the way at 35m/h it might not shift cause the ECU takes over and realizes that u might destroy something. so if u r going 50 m/h and decide to go into 2 and u go too far and en up in L dont worry the ECU got u covered. mind u if u shift into L and 2 u should make sure that u r maintaining the car and u can keep it under control. well the car doesnt have enough power for it to become stupid but if u try to take a turn at 50 and shift in the middle of the turn the car will understeer unless u r experienced with this stuff.
anyway if u have any other questions u can email me at [email protected] and if u have any useful info on the car that i should know about let me know.. i know my car preety well but not 100% so if i said something wrong feel free to correct me.
