Hi everybody, I'm starting on a new drawing. This one is a fleet of Diablos. I wanted to try multiple cars in the same scene/drawing.

There's something wierd on the ref pic that I need help with...

1. What's that on the roof of the 1st black one from the front... looks like a towel with a blue neon light

2. On the first red one (3rd car from the front), what's on top of the windshield? Is that a visor?

Here's stage 1

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/662/aplambofleet19ef.jpg

BTW: I'm only going to draw 4 of the cars, and I'll make the 4th one blue.

wow thats an awesome pic. Your guess is a good as mine about that black Diablo, looks like maybe a rag the guy used to rub down his car. And on the red roadster, yea that more than like just the visors folded up. Drawing looks good so far, keep it up

Awesome!! It will become a beautiful drawing because the lighting on the refernce is very good. Regarding the light and shadow setup, it's a perfect reference... it's just a pity that the lambos are cut off.

Do you use markers for that job? I'm nearly sure you do but I just can't believe that somebody can have such perfect results with markers.
The color flow and the color crossings are awesome. do you color it from dark to light or the other way round? How do you mix colors? Do you use some kind of blender like it is available for my Copic markers?

Thx

Thanks everybody

Robin: I'm actually using colored pencils (prismacolors). for blending colors, I'm basically putting layer after layer of color on the page.

***Anyone else know what's on top of the second car and over the windshield of the third one??

Hey man when you look really closely at the 2nd car with the stuff on top, that blue thing kinda looks like a container of sorts and the sun is shining through it, therefore it kinda looks like a light.

KustmAce

2nd one is some kind of rag or plastic bag and a plastic container with blue liquid. Probably cleaner or polish.

And I dont see anything unusual about the third one

Thanks I'll try to get them too. If I can find them here...

on the roof I think it's a bottle of any detergent... lying on a rag.

Regarding the third ones roof I'd say it's just a black reflection, because it is completely black...

Thanks again for the comments. I appreciate the input and help on the ref pic.

Kustm: I'm talking about the black thing attached to the top of the windshield of the red convertible.

Magliano: The prismacolors can be found in probably almost any art store. I've seen the scholar set (really good price) at Staples and Wal-Mart.

UPDATE... I decided to omit the towel and cleaner from the roof

How is this HUGE work going?
Your technique is amazing. May i ask you something.
This first sketch you make, how do you draw these lines? i mean, what you try to separate drawing them? diferent colors?

Cause, in my case i'm trying to do like the lighter colors first, then, the darkers...but, do square by square is isane. Understand what i'm trying to say...

I started a dodge Challenger, an i'll try to post my work here...

Thanks.
Looking foward to see this fantastic job ready!

Hi and thanks for the comments. You can order the prismacolors online at www.dickblick.com ... Here's the direct link: http://www.dickblick.com/zz205/01/
They're on a huge sale right now.

Magliano: Thanks. When doing the line drawing I usually draw the lines in the obvious spots (the outlines), and to seperate different tones. I never work square by square... it's a pain in the ass. I usually work with color picking areas with the same tone and color. Since I'm right handed, I start at the top left and end at the bottom right so I won't smear and screw anything up. I keep a scrap piece of blank paper between my hand and the drawing to keep it cleaner.

Here's an update:

stuffbyalex
08-13-2005, 02:40 AM
Hey everybody! Well I guess the update isn't working, but I'll re upload it anyways.

Venom: There are regular prismacolors and "scholar" prismacolors. The regular ones are smoother and better for blending IMO, but the difference in price is huge. I would say get the scholar set, which is what I'm using and they work fine. If you need replacements, you have to buy individual "regular" prismacolors.

Here's another one:

Incredible!! With this drawing you encouraged venom and me to try that too... I took my kindergarten pencils and gave it a try, lol

In your eyes and in compare with alex work it may looks like crap, but I was really surprised how good it works. I'll post it later on.

There's just one question I'd like you to ask:

You do pencil lines before, but what happens to them as you color the areas between them? Do you leave them or do you erase them so that the colors don't have an outline?

Thanx.

Jeep_Rubicon

That's looking smoooooooth, great work.

stuffbyalex
08-13-2005, 05:26 PM
Robin, depending on the color, I will sometimes and soemtimes not erase the pencil lines before rendering. On lighter colors (more so with warm colors), the pencil lines and even grid lines (even though they're drawn very lightly) will show thru the layers of colored pencil, and are almost impossible to get rid of once you render over them,(since there are layers of cp on top) unless you scratch them out with a knife and then go over them with white(or another color).

On dark tones, I dont bother erasing the lines, since they get covered up right away when you lay the first few layers of color down.

jeep: thanks!

Alex, fantastic work, I really like how you can give the cars a highly polished look using colored pencils.

stuffbyalex
08-17-2005, 01:29 PM
Thanks Al and Blip.

This one is oin 9x12". For burnishing I'm basically just layering color until I get an accurate tone. Going over the area with white is important, if not, you won't be able to layer any more without the area looking blotchy and grainy... don't ask me why :P

Alex

asaenz
08-17-2005, 02:22 PM
Thx Alex,
So you uhmm use white between some of the layers?

Have you explained this in one of your other threads. If so I will search for the thread that has this info.

Thx

i wish i could colour like that, i do it the worst!!!

stuffbyalex
08-19-2005, 01:28 PM
Al: Depending on the color you're working with, I find that after putting on a few layers of color on the paper surface it gets kinda grainy and hard to work with. Adding some white into the area allows me to add more layers while still getting a smooth tone. Have you ever worked w/ prismacolors before?

Chris: thanks for the the comment!

Update again. Stand back from your computer screen a few feet, then you won't see some of the blotchy areas in the yellow 0_o

Oh, and I just bought a bottle of Createx opaque white paint for my airbrush and figured out a way to do somewhat realistic clouds. tell me what you think.

Hi Alex
Thx for sharing the close up shot.
Awesome color pencil talent

I use primsa color pencils for light shading and to do outline on my pastel/marker renderings. I don't think I have ever tried burnishing, just read about it. :)

I look forward to your tutorial.
Thx

I'm interested in seeing you make a tutorial, too.

I'm not a fan of the sky. Looks too grainy.

stuffbyalex
08-21-2005, 03:16 PM
Thanks guys.

MBTN: The sky looks a little better in real life, since I enlarged it for posting. I think my paint is either too thick or my air compressor is too weak to deliver enough psi to get smooth results, which is causing the graininess.

Anyway, here's an update:

http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/3591/lamboflet77hq.jpg

I need your advice on the background. Should I leave it like this or add a horizon line and some sky?

Alex

Keep it as it is it keep the focus on the cars which are absolutly gorgeous. Also the angle of the picture would bring the horizon on the top of the drawing. Fantastic rendering anyway, your coloring technique is flawless.

08-24-2005, 04:21 PM
Well, can't really do anything about the background... I wouldn't be able to add blue over 10 layers of grey without screwing something up and making it look blotchy, so I'm calling this drawing done! thanks for all your help along the way.

Those are very cool.
Interesting cropping.
Super reflections.
I was sad to see the diablo go.
I loved the look of that era of supercars.
The guy from topgear called them a
