SS/SC Vs. 240SX

Well, the monsoons finally let up here in Phoenix, so I figured I'd go for a relaxing evening cruise. While heading back to my side of town to meet up with some friends, along come some very bright headlights that belong to a 1995-96 Nissan 240SX. It had at least some sort of exhaust and for a fart pipe style can, it didn't sound all that bad. Whatever else it had for mods I could not tell(I'm sure it had others and I will get to that in a bit). I didn't take much notice in him other than the car was very clean and sounded good, so I kept my pace of 50 mph for the next couple miles.

I don't like waiting for lolly gaggers who mope around in traffic doing 15 below the speed limit and for the life of me, everyone was driving around like that(must still be in shock from that wet stuff that fell from the sky the night before). So I was moving in and out of traffic keeping my pace, but not cutting anyone off of being dangerous about it. This however, caught the Nissan's attention and he followed suite. I figured he'd try to line up with me sooner or later but it didn't look like he wanted to bite, he was content with following in my wake as I was cutting a whole in traffic.

A couple of miles went by and I pretty much had forgotten about the little white Nissan, but apparently he didn't forget about me. He was about 4-5 cars back in the lane to my left and no sooner had I looked back, he punched it. I could hear him downshift and I saw his hyper whites lurch upwards in my mirror...the little bastard was trying to get the jump on me! I had around 3500-4000 g's on the tach which is far out of my powerband but figured I didn't need to downshift to put an end to this. So I just mashed it when he was about 3 cars behind, but this wasn't enough to stop him in his tracks, he was actually still gaining . By 65 mph I was looking at his front bumper as it was right next to me, this had me thinking to myself "Is this fool gonna pass me or what??? Maybe I should have downshifted!:eek7:" However, this thought was put to rest as I reached my powerband in the top of 3rd gear as his pull was haulted and I put 2 1/2 car lengths fairly quickly.

I was impressed with his little Nissan to say the least. I looked up the stats of his year of 240 and it looks like they come with about 155 BHP in stock form. Theres no way a 155 HP car pulled that well on me up to those speeds so I dunno what else he did, but I'm pretty sure he had a few other things done. Nice cars either way...made my night a whole lot more interesting. :naughty:

Good race, good race

Those 240SX's are damn good cars, wouldn't mind owning one.

those Ka24 engines don't slouch, really its a truck engine in a car so it has some good torque behind it but its suprising he was able to come up so hard from a roll, good kill.

2 cars I'd really like to race soon
a WRX and a Cobalt SS. Your SS sounds pretty damn mean

I'm enjoying it so far. :)

I was most certainly surprised at the rate of his pull, which is why I'm pretty positive he was modded a bit. What N/A mods would help him get a good amount of grunt? Do the KA motors take well to the basic bolt ons?

If I get another car to fix up one of these days it's gonna be a 95+ 240, i'm really liking that car. Uh oh...I actually admited that I want a japo car, ewww. :icon16:

from what I've learned they take pretty well to i/h/e for being older cars but who knows what else he could have had... I really haven't been doing as much studying into the ka24(de) engine as I have the sr20dets. Maybe it was cammed? Maybe he had a small dry shot?

Maybe he got into his powerband pretty easily from the speed he was going and because you weren't quite in yours he was able to pull quick? I know I've had that happen to me a couple times.
Well I don't know what else he'd have besides I/H/E but I'm sure those breather mods helped him from a roll.

He might have just had a stock SR20DET engine. That would put him around 170-180ish whp, and alot more w/ mods (Matty had one w/ 258 whp w/ minor bolt ons). If he had the SR20DET he couldn't have been too modded. If he had the KA24DE he must've had alot of work, if he wasn't turboed. They respond well to boost from what i've heard, but don't seem to be screamers naturally aspirated.

the stock KA puts out around 130whp. they take basic bolt ons extremely well. with intake, headers, exhuast, and pulleys they can gain atleast 25whp. thats very nice gains but its still putting down only 155whp. they have very good mid end and runs out of power by 6K rpm. those breathing mods do help shift the powerband up top alittle bit becasue normally the car would run out of breath by 5500rpm. most bolt on 240sx thats not boosted will run mid to low 15's in the 1/4 but they have a hard time breaking a 90mph trap speed.

I believe Nip mobile would have been equally acceptable on the PC chart.

Yea, 90mph is hard to break on NA 240. Sad thing is, I spent like $1500 and did 93mph with my super ghetto turbo setup. NO intercooler at 5psi.

my friend's 95 240sx has a cat-back, header, intake, nology hotwires, and new plugs and dyno'd 148whp ona dynojet dyno and if he launches awesome when i bog, i can barely catch up by the end of our ghetto 1/4 drag strip so yeah, they aren't half bad at all

may I ask was that more to hooking up issuces not used to car or poor tires?

I hear they really hop off the line and are hard to launch.

Three things caused my poor 60' times at the track.

1.Insane wheel hop, the motor knocks back and forth on the spongy rubber mounts causing back wheel hop.
2.Horrible track conditions, firebird does not prep the track at all for open nights, it sucks compared to the street. I get way more wheel hop at the track.
3.Shitty clutch, GM put the weakest damn clutch they could find in these things. Everyone that has an SS that's driven it hard hates the clutch's gripping strength.

I'm not the best driver in the world, but I do just fine with the car. It mainly needs some smoothing over before it'll be worth a damn off the line. So I'll stick to mostly roll racing for now.
