Here is what my 2000 SS has been doing to me..so far i have replaced fuel filter, plugs and wires, oxygen sensor, new maf, thermostat and iac.
I notice it usually will act up at random times..75% of the tiem when its warmed up....i also notice its been running a little warmer...and i just put in a 180 t-stat.. still runs slightly warmer than it used to...anyways it first happened when i went to start it up one day after i went out to eat and it started but idled rough and would die when i put it into gear..i fought with it for about 5 min til it finally ran ok and ran great for another week...then it happened again this time while i was sittiing at a light the rpms jumped up and down up and down the car shook and i gave it gas but it was like the gas pedal was a dummy pedal, it didnt move..even floored it still had that same idle...it staleld so i fought with it to get it started again..which took about 25 seconds...and then she ran like a champ...no problems for the rest of the night...next day ran out...did a few things came home parked it...6 hours later started it to leave...rough idle ..went to give it gas..nothign then it flared up ran good and then right away back to the garbage idle...then it stalled..this time it would crank and crank and sound liek it was gonna go but just wouldnt...so i took another vehicle...came back about 2 hours later...still wouldnt start...i kept on messing with it then out of nowhre she fired up...ran great. There are no check engine lights or anything...no codes in the computer...nothing out of the ordinary that i can see...i am looking to see what other ppls thoughts are on this...before i go ahead and change a whole bunch of crap for no reason....its just driving me crazy...

i ahve an 02 SS and im having some of the same symptoms. sometimes when im just sitting at a light the rpms jump up and down repeatedly suddenly level off, then do it again. but when i give mine gas the engine revs up and keeps runnig.
i think my problem is the idle control motor. it might be something to try, they only run about 30$ at my local auto parts dealer.

I have a hard time believing that my iac is gone...it seems to function a-1 but hey it cant hurt right..the car is almost 6 years old now..and i know that they are subjected to heat , carbon , etc..

It does sound like it is the IAC ,,it would surely back up the reason for it running hot,,,the IAC would cause it to suck air and sucking air or having a vacuum leak would make the motor run hot. Did you have it checked for codes?code 35 would enterpret the idle speed control or the Idle air control.Autozone checks codes free.

no fault codes whatsoever...today it acted up again...this time under acceleration i was coming home and it was liek it had power then not then had power then not...it would pull then not pull..it never went close to dying but it was like a lawnmower that surges..even when i was on the gas at 3000 rpm..if i let off the idle was all jumpy and sounds like it was missing slightly...which sounds liek coil packs to me..or something else ignition related..i had it in my driveway idling after this and it was smooth for a lil bit then you could hear the exhaust tone gettin a few slight pops here and there..and when i went to go give it the slightest amout of gas... it would rev up it would stumble and fall all over it self and the harder i tried it finally stalled and wouldnt restart , just crank and crank , and soun like it wanted to go,..i messed with it then it started i gunned it a few times and it cleared up and i even drove it for a whiel and it didnt screw up once...its crazy...i swear this car should be crushed into a cube...

It is very odd that it is doing all this and no codes are comming up,,are you sure you have good gas in it??It sounds like an IAC but that would show a code 35,,,if it jumps like someone is pulling the coil wire off it then it would have to be the crank sensor but that would display a code 18 or a 17 that would reference something in the ignition circuit,It does sound like something that is gonna drive you nuts especially if the puter aint kicking you any codes to help you diagnos it. Good Luck!!

I have an Idea,,try this,,disconnect the battery then mash down on the brake 3 times wait about five minutes then reconnect the battery then with key on push throttle cable to the floor very slowely and count to six and do this 3 times then shut ignition off wait 60 seconds and then give it a try.

i've done all the tricks in the book lol...i've disconnected the batter for a week lol hoping it was something iffy...its gotta be somethign sensitive to heat..but then again it will do it then not do it..stupid electronics lol

my monte has been throwing codes for both oxygen sensors for a couple months now. i replaced them both and the code keeps coming back. when i first started having problems, my car was throwing a random/multipul misfire code. if accelerated hard, the engine would act like the comp was cutting off the gas @ about 4000rpm. i reaplaced the plugs, wires, coil packs, and ignition control module, and nothing helped. in the end it was my catylitic converted being cloged that was causing the problem.
your car isn't acting the same way but i was told at the shop i bought my converter from that he had heard of this same problem before in the montes so it might not hurt to check that out too.

i have seen crankshaft position sensors and also camshaft position sensors cause intermittent problems sort of like the one you are having.

ya i was hoping those would be ok lol... I know that they usually give out when warm...this morning i went down the street and all of 5 min it acted up, i came out of the hardware store...and it was still running like crap... today was honestly the worst it has run...and its been getting harder to start back up...i notice if i pump the gs around it willl usually catch... which maks it seem more like a fuel problem.( even though fuel injection really doesnt care either way) .. but hey i might as well change those..it coudlnt hurt..anybody think an egr valve could do this....and since it is running a bit hot.. i wonder if the cat is partially plugged..the car has power..just not as much as i thought it would... i noticed the exhaust tone on my buddy's 96 bonneville is a hella lot louder straight pipe than mne was right off the cat...the car for some reason seems to run warmer than normal to me.. i noticed if i rev the rpms to like 2000 and hold it the heat radiating off he egr burns my hands..i dont recall that it was supposed to be that hot..i know exhaust gas is hot but not to where the egr valve smoked last tiem i did that

if the egr is stuck open like a piece of carbon is wedged in the valve, then it will cause a drivability problem because the computer can't control the amount of air intake to the motor. you should normally get an EGR position code if you are having this problem but not all the time. if you are questioning the CAT. you might disconnect the exhaust before the CAT and see if it runs any better. It will be extremely loud but will eliminate the CAT to see if that is your problem.

when it ran ok..i had a hunch and unplugged the egr valve...and for some reason it hasnt acted up yet...could an egr possible cause this much of a problem...and if the cat is partially clogged..it would technically force the exhaust through the open egr if and when it sticks..so it would be uncontrolable..am i right by saying this..thats what my theory is...cause i know a bad egr usually auses stallign not crazy bucking as far as i can remember

Hi I am new to the forum but I found this forum because I was having the same problems it sounds like you were having. My car had no power when accelerating and eventually starting sqealing really bad when accelerating. After changing all the plugs wires egr valve fuel filter and a new belt I took it to a dealer and found the Cat converter was plugged. It has fixed my problem and is running great again. Hope this helped good luck
