No A/C in 2000 GT

I've got the auto climate control and have weak a/c. I get just a mild coolness. This is a new car for me so I'm not sure how cold it gets. Does the a/c in grand prixs get real cold? I think I'm holding freon and checked the fuses. Should I try swapping out the ambient air sensor even if it produces the correct outside temp.? Any other info would be greatly appreciated. I also tried spraying some compressed air into the vent next to the stearing wheel (on the right) and it made the a/c just a little better.

thanks in advance
andy

If the ambient air temperature sensor reads correctly, I'd leave it alone. You may be holding R134a refrigerant but the only way to know for sure is to connect a pressure gauge to the low pressure port and see if the charge is correct based on the ambient temperature.

Also check to see if someone installed a cabin air filter and try cleaning it. Make sure the condensor sitting in front of the radiator is clean and free of foreign objects.

Thanks much. I will take a look at the above mentioned ideas. I am confused as to what you mean by checking the refrigerant with the ambient sensor. When I was going to add r134 I hooked the pressure gauge up to the port which I beleive was in the upper right corner of the bay. The gauge stated that I was full. Does it sound like I had the correct port? I will also check out that condenser for debris.

thanks again,
andy

The charge is checked based on the actual ambient temperature. For example if its 100 degrees actual air temperature the gauge should reads somewheres between 45 - 55 psi. The low side port is the smaller of the two. The high side is the big port but don't check it there. The low side port is the one by the firewall closest to the evaporator.

Also you can feel the input side of the evaporator and it should be cold and compare it to the output and it should be similar in coldness.

according to the GM computer, the fitting is near the firewall toward the passenger side, so it sounds like you have the correct fitting. I agree with bnaylor that you should check the condenser for debris both on the front and in-between it and the radiator. If that doesn't fix it, then you probably have a weak temp valve/motor that's not pulling completely to cool.
