Well, let me give you a quick summary and let me introuduce my self.

I am 16, I live in Connecticut. My family owns an autoparts store, and my next door neighbor is a mechanic with a garage bigger than his house, with a lift, and every tool imanginable. I recently got my first vehicle, a 93' GMC Jimmy 2 Door. It was initially 200 dollars, but he refunded me 100 dollars due to a crack in the windshield. The reason the guy sold it so unbelievable cheap is because it was his son's old car, and it was just sitting in his yard and he wanted it gone.

The thing runs fine, but needs alittle work.

It failed Connecticut state emmission tests.....
What would make this fail?
I might replace the catalytic converter and the o2 sensor.
Besides those things, what should i check for that would make it fail?

-The front windshield is cracked, and the wipers dont work
-The rear window button on the dash isnt connected.
-No dome lights work
-The gas gauage is broken, what can be done about this?
-The PRNDD21 display, the orange needle that tells you your gear is broken. Fixable?
-Rear brakes dont work, problem is the master cylinder.
-Minor damage on drivers side door
-Small small areas of rust. ( i have lots of bondo )
-Need grille, ebay?

I want to get this car running pefect and look nicer before i get my licence in october. This is my first car and im really excited about it.

mike01116, ahhhh to be 16 y/o. My first ride was a 55 Chevy step side p/u that was in about the same shape as your Jimmy. I paid 300.00 for it. I think I still owe my brother the 50.00 I borrowed from him so I could get it.

If the engine runs good and you have a good transmission you may be on to a pretty good little ride here. I would prioritize the problems and deal with the safety issues first. Replace the master cylinder and bleed the brakes. Is the SES light on?If so go to Auto Zone and have them put a code reader on it. That may give you some insight into the emission problem. Othes here who are much more knowledable that I am will chime in. I would also check the rear in. Make sure it is full. Trust me on this one.

Good luck and have fun fixing this truck up. Keep us posted on your progress.

the engine runs great, and the tranny is fine.
me and my neighbor opened up the master cylinder and he tried to explain how it worked, and what was broken, but only half of it is working, so only the front brakes work. A new one is ~184 roughly. A Remfd one is ~40. I will have my mom pick me one up from her store and it will be free. :)

The only lights that are on are ABS and Parking brake, and my neighbor said they would both go off if the master cylinder was fixed.

My neigbor has a diagnostic tool that you plug into a jack underneath the stearing wheel. Is that the same thing as a code reader? I think we were gonna hook that up to it next time i go over.

We have a huge field and wooded area with trails behind our houses, so we decided to take it offroading and test out the 4 low and see how it ran. It ran fine, but there was a really loud clunking noise, and its the front ball joints that need to be replaced. Are those hard to replace?

yeah, get those brakes fixed ...

other cheap / easy things might be to change the Transfer Case fluid and front and rear differential fluid. Also, grease all 11 zirc fittings in your front suspension. Too easy not to do. Might not fix your clunk though.

did a new filter come with the tranny fluid? If not, get a new tranny filter.

I'd change the fuel filter too if you can't find out the last time it was changed.

check all your fuses if you haven't already

have fun!

well, we put the jimmy up on the lift, ball joints didnt need replacing. something else is making the noise, not sure what. when we were driving it is was a loud CLUNKING noise from the front right wheel area.

also, we put it on the lift, enough that the tires were off the ground, and found out that the front wheels do not turn. i can switch between 4 hi and 4 low but only the real wheels will turn. its not the motor in the transfer case, anyone know what it might be?

the SES light finally came on so now i might be able to find out why its failing emmissions.

I took it offroading for a good hour today, and i had one hell of a time, its a great vehicle so far, i cant wait to get it running good.

look up the threads on the hood clunk...I thought I had a noise coming from the wheel area and it turned out to be the hood....
