98 keyless entry problem! Please help!!!

Ok, here we go, i own a 98 blazer ls that didn't not come factory with a keyless entry system. So recently i got a remote and receiver out of a 2000 blazer and tried to get them to work in my 98. I plugged the module in the correct spot under the driver side panel near the parking break.

So i tried to program the remote and i could not get my blazer to go into the programming mode. (I did the hold unlock while turning ignition key on, off, on, off.)

So then i went to the chevrolet dealer in town and they got my vin # and the number's off of my receiver module and remote and they said it would all work. But they also said the they would have to program the module to the truck's computer cause the computer is not picking the receiver module up.

My question is this. Do i really need for them to do this or are they just trying to get my money. Could i just disconnect the positive on the battery to reset the computer and maybe it would pick it up or is there another way to do this?

Oh, and by the way i know that the remote works.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanx!!!

PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS

All Extra transmitters must be programmed at this time. When a new transmitter is programmed, it will deactivate the old transmitters.

Transmitter Programming:

1) With the driver door closed, hold down the power UNLOCK button on the door panel.

2) Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

3) Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

4) Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

5) Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

6) Release the power unlock button on the door panel. The remote control door lock receiver will respond by cycling the locks to indicate the receiver is in the programming mode.

7) Hold down the lock and unlock button on the transmitter for about 30 seconds. The locks will again cycle to confirm programming.

- REPEAT step 7 for each additional transmitter.

8) Turn the ignition to the ON position in order to exit the transmitter programming mode.

Not to sound rude but i really don't think you understood what i am saying. My blazer was not born with keyless entry and it's not as easy as just programming the remotes. The computer doesn't even know that the receiver module is there therefor it will not go into programming mode. Understand???

Your vehicle's computer doesn't control the receiver for keyless entry. Are you sure the receiver from the donor vehicle wasn't faulty or shorted out?

HI I have a 98 blazer and added the reciever and the correct fobs and you are correct the will not program. The BCM controls the keyless remote function. I work at a chevy dealership in service and we cannot get Chevrolet TAN to even talk to me about it, they say we are modifying the truck and they will not kelp or give me help with what to do with the BCM. I know the newer blazers have BCM's that are made with OR with out keyless remotes but the 98 only shows one.I have found that there should be B+ voltage from the BCM to the reciever on the signal wire but there is none.Any one have any Idea what to do??

I tried doing this quite some time ago. I picked up a factory keyless module and fob from the same year. The wire harness was already there for my '98 Blazer LS, which did not come from the factory with this option.

The body computer does control the system. The factory keyless module appears to simply receive commands from the fob, then tells the body computer what command to take.

In my case, I've found the same thing. I don't have battery voltage from the body computer, but I have battery voltage on the other lines. The system won't go into programming mode.

This made me suspect from the beginning that there was a simple flag in the body modules that was set to "off" if the vehicle didn't come with the factory keyless entry.

Chris, Do the instructions you provided apply to the Cheve Suburban? I have been trying to add a second remote and get it programed without paying ~65 for the dealer to do it for me.

Might it be easier/cheaper to just get an aftermarket? Mine came with the remote doors but I installed an alarm and the door lock/unlock wires are quite easily accessible to tie a 3rd party remote starter or alarm in.

From my experience after adding the keyless entry module the dealer will need to program the new identifier via the body control module. All modules in ODB2 need to have the security identifier programmed or the controlling module will not respond. In this case adding an optional module such as keyless entry will be constued as foreign and unsecure until the correct identifier is passed. All unrecognized modules are automatically ignored by all other GM devices on the vehicle BUS.

A 3rd party product that does not interface with the body control module and simply triggers the lock relay could be added without any flashing of the system.

The Body Control module is always the parent module of all security functions...in fact when I use my scan tool to connect to the BCM you can control all security functions including the keyless entry.

A guy i work with took his blazer to a dinky little garage with one of those scan tools and the guy took some time to figure out how but managed to turn on the module. the vehicle now works with factory key fobs and module. The only problem i am having is where is the module actually located since my 01 blazer has no module. i don't want to ask the guy at the garage because he will want me to order through him.My buddy has a huge scrapyard with dozens of blazers hopefully i can get the module there.someone please help. You seem to know where these components are located

It is located on the hush panel right above the e-brake.

I have yet to get mine working :(
