this is my first posting and I an a newbie to AF...my son drives my 1998 S-10 4 x 4 and he took it in for inspection (NY)...they told him that it needed wheel bearing assembly and an idler arm...over $550...any thoughts??? Is this a do it yourself project for someone who has not done any REAL car work in over 10 years? Or should I just "pay the man"? Thanks so much!!

That sounds about right, and if you've got the tools i would go ahead and do it. The center nut might be a pain without an impact to get it off. But it's just a basic 2 hour job of bolting and ubolting. Good luck and welcome to AF.

Thanks for the repliy...my son works with a couple of guys tht are encouraging him to tackle the job himself along with their help. He has access to an indoor shop with many floor jacks but no lift. They do have air tools there that he can use too. I think the truck needs U joints too as there is a clunk sound starting to develop. I told him to give it a try and see how he does.
