You could either go to a local junkyard and pick up an engine out of either a GT or a Z24 (same engine) or you could go with a 2.2 or 2.3 ECOTECH. Really respond well to mods for a GM engine...otherwise if you really want more power try the 3.1 out of the (I think, im not sure) 2nd gen Z24's. It's a V6 so its all good.
Hope that helped

2.3 Ecotec? where did you see one of these? The current Ecotec models out right now are the 2.0L SC and the 2.2L N/A. Coming out at this time is the 2.4L N/A. No 2.3L Ecotoec is planned.
the 2.3L Quad 4 is a hefty motor with a bad rap, you can make more power with that motor than with just about any other for the J-body (excluding the Ecotec), some of us have tapped into the many secret mods available for this GM powerhouse. The bad rap comes from weak factory head gaskets. Any rebuilt 2.3L will have new gaskets and no longer suffer from this problem.
Stay away from the 3.1L and the 2.8L V6 motors. you are much better off with the 3400 or the 3800 (SC), both are hard to fit, but are the ones the second gen guys are swapping to for more power (3400 mostly). you need a complete subframe, so that's going to tell you how much work is involved, and that's just to set the motor on, it still wont fit in the engine bay without extensive mods to the fender walls. you need a computer, harness, tranny, axles, mounts, exhaust, fuel lines, cables, and a whole lot more for the project to work.
the 2.4L was used in the Grand Am and various other GM cars. you're best bet is to stay within the 96 to 99 range to keep everything wired up the same. plug and play.
My suggestion, if you want to make more power, 2.3L HO QUAD 4. More base FWHP than the 2.4L makes at the crank, and can be made a 2.6L turbocharged monster for under $5k (over 300WHP). uses the same wiring harness with a different computer (needs harness repinned). As long as you have a manual tranny go with the 2.3L, auto tranny, get another 2.4L.
The Ecotec will require a complete wiring harness and computer, tranny, steering(? rack might be different and not same PS) , throttle assembly (I believe it's drive by wire throttle), exhaust, radiator, and motor mounts, and it still might not run.
To put it this way...my Sunfire GT can beat any other Sunfire GT stock for stock now that I have the 2.3L HO. with my current mods, I can out run a 1.8T GTI in the 1/4, I walk on v6 mustangs, and make V8 cars look twice and sweat. I currently make 172 FWHP (roughly 200-205 Crank HP)
Hope that helped

Thank you Mr. Goodwrench. Yeah I know ther is no 2.3 eco, I was confusing the 2.2 eco with your beloved 2.3 HO Quad 4
And where did you hear about a 2.4, as far as I've heard, they have completley discontinued using it as a powerplant.
IMO, probably the best way to go is stick with the engine you got, or go with the Eco, from what i've read the eco takes a hell of a lot of punishment before it starts to fade. Or go rip the engine out of a Cobalt SS. I've heard of guys running a 100 shot on stock internals, with no grenading.
Best of luck to ya on your search.

the Eco will add the 2.4L displacement, not the 2.4L TC, to it's line up in the new SS cobalt N/A and is the powerplant for the Solstice. it's rated at 170HP.
the Eco will take ALOT of work to fit in the 97. basically everything under the hood will be needed as well as everything in the dash. All the electronics, the mounts, tranny, complete wiring harness, gauges, and alot more.
The Quad 4 is still the original powerhouse of the GM line up. the Eco is a good replacement, but not in an older model. the Eco has handled 800HP on a stock lower end using nitrous and turbo, but not for the street. The Quad can be made to make 300 + HP on a streetable application using stock parts and a turbo only, and as high as 600HP and still run on the street. Anything before 2000 will need a complete retrofit for the Eco to work. Too much work IMO for the amount of power you get from a stock motor. the Quad or another 2.4L TC will make more stock power with less work.
Oh, and I'm not Mr. Goodwrench. I just happen to know more about J-body's than you seem to :P (J/K)

Ahhhhh....ok....I figured it wouldn't have been that difficult to fit it in there...conisdering the 2200 was also an engine option.
Yeah....im no good wrench either :)

your best bet is stay with the original 2.4l, unless you've got help, and are fab savvy.
plus the 2.4DOHC is easily found in the junkyard runner for about $500.,
and if you happen to get even a newer ('00+ powerplant), you have your old injectors and rail, your old knock sensor, and whatever else you might have to swap of your engine.
I definitely wouldn't junk yous, as it sounds like you'll have a great daily driver once it's back on the road.
hope this helps,

the Eco is a totally different animal, that's why the swap is so hard.
And yes the 2.4L is the best option, since you unbolt and rebolt motors for the swap. the injectors and other various electronic items will have to be swapped out if you go with the 2k+, like was mentioned a couple of times now LOL
