hi,
I wanted to know if it is possible to put 5.7L lt1 engine in a 98 grand prix se. I have a 94 camaro z28 that was rear ended that i am getting the engine from. i also have a 98 grand prix which will soon be replaced with a new car. so i thought of using both cars for a project.
I know that I will need to use the engine ,tranny, and rear end from the camaro for the swap. I just don't know if it is possible or if someone has done it, so I know how it worked out.
thanks,
gw1525

If you want to put the time and money into a car, you can do anything. It just, how much time and money do you have?

Hey Jim, remember a while back we discussed a similar issue. Someone did that and spared no expense to the tune of $20K. It was a late model GP '97 and up in which he mounted a small block Chevy engine into it and converted it to rear wheel drive. The engine from the pics I saw was mounted where the back seat is located. It was posted for sale on EBay but I don't know what ever happened to it. I guess where there is a will there is a way and anythings possible. But it wasn't exactly cheap either.

it'd be cheaper to buy a blown up Camaro/Firebird and put your drivetrain it it than it would to do all the fabricating necessary for this swap. If money is no object, and you want a one-off car that no one else has, then anything is possible.

I saw a GP in the Pontiac booth at the Phoenix NASCAR race in 2000 that had a 5.7 liter LS1 and the Versatrak AWD from a Pontiac Aztek. It also had flared fenders, a convertible top, a roll bar, and rolled on 19's. GM claimed 12.2 in the 1/4 mile. I know it looked sweeeet. I believe it was a predecessor to the G8 concept car that ran around the show scene for a few years. I've been thinking about getting a beater 97 or 98 GTP and going for it... LOL. I did an S10/V8 swap once, but this would be WAY more work.

Im no expert...but...my guess is that there will be alot of cutting and welding...pontiac is FWD and Camaro is RWD...if the driveshaft is'nt 100% correct you can have big problems...also, can the frame of the Pontiac accept RWD and the kind of tourqe the LS1 produces?

The article I read about the AWD Grand Prix, they (Pontiac) had to put an entire subframe under the rear end. The rear subframe in the cars now are only designed to be pulled down the road. And there was in issue with the drive shaft also. Heck with all that, if you want a V8, drop an entire Olds Toronado set up in it, 455 ci and FWD.

There's an LS1 powered FWD Impala floating around somewhere. I think it was a GM project. There were some threads about it on www.clubgp.com
