We recently did a sohc vtec swap in my friend's crx. It was the celestial blue pearl on at the 4th gen meet. We arent quite sure if the vtec is kicking in. What is a surefire way to tell the it is defiently working?

If everything is hooked up right and the ecu is good, you would get a code if a sensor or the vtec solenoid was bad. If you arent getting a code, I'm supposing everything is ok and it might not be engaging due to insufficient oil pressure, coolant temp, or speed over 20mph. Try revving from under the hood while toggling +12v to the solenoid and see if there isnt a difference in sound. I've heard that the x-over isnt very noticable in the sohc, but if you're looking hard, you probably should pick it up. When we tried that test with my b16, it screamed when it got 12v to the solenoid. unfortunately my ecu doesnt want to make it work when it's supposed to  .

...or try this, start out in second and just ride it all the way to redline...you should definitely hear it switch..if it doesnt, you'll also feel the power drop out above 5000 or so...

or if you wanted to have a VTEC light anyways then run the positive wire to the VTEC solenoid and just ground the negative wire. Drive around the block and when VTEC kicks in then the light should turn on. If the solenoid isnt getting power(no VTEC) then the light wont light up.

.....or just do it the easy way :)

Warm up the car, make sure it's got plenty of oil and find a highway.... @ 4800 RPMs or so, you WILL hear a QUIET change in pitch..... it's very subtle, but it is very audible if you know what to listen for....
