2003 Buick Regal - shifter park brake interlock

Car will not shift out of park with brake pedal applied and engine running. Will shift by pressing shift lock release. Is there a solenoid? How does it interact with the brake pedal and the ingnition switch.

Thanks,
John

Sounds like a BTSI problem. Brake Transmission Shift Interlock. There should be a shift interlock solenoid and its located in the center console by the shifter.

Do you know how I will be able to tell what to replace?

The part in question is the whole shifter assembly. The solenoid(s) are an integral part of it. I don't believe the solenoid(s) are available separately but I could be wrong on that.

For the 2003 Regal the GM part # is 12568203, Transmission Shift Control, GM List $312.

You could disassemble the center console and see if the connectors are plugged in properly, etc. When disassembled you'll see the wiring harness and the hook up point to the shift assembly.

Plus I've heard of a way to bypass the condition mechanically via the shift lock release but its only a temporary fix. Good luck!

Thanks for your help. I greatly appreciate it. I was able to replace the transmission shift control with a part from the junk yard. I used a transmission shift control with a B2SI module from a 1999 Grand Prix. I had to re-rivet the gear indicator from the Grand Prix with the one from the Regal. It looks and works as good as new.
Thanks again.
