want to remove my A/C

I have the a/c in but i cut the belt cuz it wasnt blowin cold anymore. so i just want to take it out, how can i tell if its still got pressure in the lines, how do i relieve this pressure, and can i leave the piping that runs through the firewall?
g-ride-si
08-03-2005, 05:44 PM
you can leave it but shits gonna come out when u take the lines off the compressor, might be a little, might be alot, just be prepared to duck and run.all it did to me was burn my hand for a min. once u take the lines off the compressor they will empty so go ahead and remove them from the firewall after that.

Just releave the pressure from the service port. Just stick a screw driver in it like you would if you were letting air out of a tire.

Try taking it to a shop and have them evacuate it for you. That way you don't release that crap into the air.

i had to drain mine when we put the new engine in.. i just bled it with a really long metal thing i had laying around and just let her spray into the air..screw mother nature, she is a cold unforgiving bitch.

one of my lines formed a leak as I was swapping an engine, I just pulled the rest of it out...

ok how about the a/c radiator? do i have to take off the bumper to remove it or do i have to take my radiator out?

radiator comes out then the other is behind it

Don't be a jackass and destroy the environment; take it to a service station and let them drain it.
91CRXTC
08-05-2005, 08:29 AM
ok i guess i could just bring it to a valvoline or jiffy lube to have it drained. But thats if its even charged.

Welli figured i would see how much would come out if i bleed the lines myself, to do so i put rod in that fitting that looks like the stem where you fill your tires. nothing came out so i then causiously loosened a bolt that holds the lines on the compresser and didnt hear anything so i am assuming that the lines are empty, am i right?

It should be a little more than 10lbs... and every little bit counts... ever notice when you have a fat ass passenger or when your gas tank is full how you have to push the car harder?

It weighs aprox 45 lbs. The compressor is on a clutch, if its turned off your loosing pretty much 0 hp.

yeah it only takes it out when the clutch is engaged, living here in california I would LOVE to have an airconditioner but unfortunately when I bought the car the owner decided he didn't need one, I saw a crx in the junk yard with all the air conditioning parts, but I wasn't gutsy enough to try to take it out :p screw HP I want air.

If you didn't hear anything when you pressed down on the fitting, the R-12 is already drained. The same thing happened to me because my caps had been missing for awhile. Again, bad for the environment, but there was nothing I could do about it, and I actually saved the $25 I would've had to spend on a retrofit kit (nobody has R-12 fittings anymore). Enjoy the 45-lb difference.

air conditioner only uses about half horsepower... These people disconnecting their AC are just too stupid. They dont know what theyre doing.

A/C removal is not so much about the hp gain (which is admittedly minimal) as it is about weight loss and the space gained in the engine bay. 45 pounds is a substantial amount of weight relative to a 2000-lb car. Not only is the overall curb weight reduced, but front/rear weight distribution also improves.

thank you, thats what im gettin at that it wasnt just the HP which addmittedly isnt that much but now that i have a KOYO radiator i dont have the space for the a/c fan and i could used the wieght loss, but a couple laps around the track and a good diet should help that also.

Removing the AC doesn't really have much of a gain in HP, but the weight difference is great. I did it on my Integra when I had it, helped, of course it's not gonna make it a racer over niht, but every little bit helps right?

Indeed. Every 100 pounds translates translates roughly to 0.1 seconds in the quarter.

you must be high on drug... i put my a/c compresor on weigh scale and it only weight less than 7 pounds. the a/c condenser, fan and hoses are less than 9 pounds...total about 16 pounds. wow..who you trying to bullshit man?

Okay, you signed up with that name to post that. And so what if it's not exactly 45lbs... whoopty fucking tittly shiznits... Remove all the plastic shit, belt, wires, relays, etc...
Oh yeah, if you replace the crank pulley with a racing pulley it also significantly reduces mass/weight... blah blah blah...

agreed lighter is better whether its 45lbs or 9lbs. if i dont use it i dont keep it on. Remeber the lighter the better, as long as you have the means to keep it on the ground.

R-12 is the liquid (its a type of oil) that is pressureized to cool the air air passing through your condeser... now adays we ues R-134A, which cools better and is safer for the atmosphere.

dude..dont even make comments if you dont know what youre talking about. it makes you look stupid..you know what i mean? this shit is not a type of oil. r-12 is just a short cut name for refrigerant-12. the chemical symbol of this refrigerant is CCl2F2 (1 atom of C-carbon, 2 atoms of Cl-chlorine, and 2 atoms of F-fluorine).

no shit im so sick of whiny little babies you dont need to be a smartass if someone is wrong. this is a tech forum correct them but dont be an ass especially if your new. regardless whether its an oil or refridgerant everything else he said was correct. And most refridgerants for car ac systems DO have some amount of oil in them. without the oil the o-rings would freeze and crack and leak the refridgerant out. next time think before you post.

my question is only for the smart people out there..i removed my A/C compresor about a month ago beacuse it was making too much knocking noise. i bleed out all the R12 in the air. i now got a new compresor from the junk yord. can just charge this compresor with r143 myself or do i need to go to a repair shop? too hot here in california and i need my airconditioner back. dont really give a shit about the weight lost or horses gain. stupid people, please dont respond...

at the bottom of this thread are links to buy the r12 and r134 so i figure you can do it yourself. Need to make sure you have the updated connector so you can hook into the line. My a/c being from a 91 crx it needs to be updated but if its not in then it dont matter. And if your does need to be updated then i think they got links down there for that too. (Not sure)

If you plan on retrofitting to R-134a you should replace all the O-rings, install new charge fittings, a new dryer, bring it to an A/C shop to have them check your work and get the system flushed and charged. GL
TheSilentChamber

Yeah, you cant just throw r134 in it, it has to be retrofitted.

to any smart people out there, please tell me what to do next.
i just baught all the shit i needed for retrofitting to r134a at walmart. fittings $9.95, a small can of oil $5.99, and two cans of r143a $16, and can dispensing hose $8.
I dont want it done in the A/C shop cus it will cost me $200 and my money is limited. but they vacuum my A/C system for $25.
just wondering why my compressor wont run when i turn on my A/C and engine running. is this got something to do with the pressure in the compressor? i havent filled up the compressor with r143 yet.

instructions on the can says the compressor must be running to fill it with r143 to the sucktion side. i guess the compressor need to be running to suck the oil and the r143 in the can..
so i put jumper wire from battery to compressor to get it running and it works. i then just hook up the cans of oil and r143 to the compressor one at a time to the sucktion side. then started my engine and turned on my AC till each can are empty..after that i reconnected the original wiring harness back to the compressor. now my AC is blowing ice cold air. shit i got my AC working again and it was not complicated as i thought.
so youre right, without refrigerant, compressor wont work. thanks for the tips
