Trouble shifting while on the accelerator

I have a 2001 grand prix gt with 75000 miles. I had an engine code come up that said cylinder 1 misfire. I replaced the plugs and wires and it still is missing. When I get on the gas the engine rpms increase with no increase in power. Any ideas? thanks.

When engine misfire is detected the PCM cuts back on timing and advance along with other things. This is to protect the CAT convertor.

The possibilities are the coil pack for cylinder one or the specific fuel injector. Try running some good quality fuel injection cleaner through the system.

To be more specific on my problem the vehicle seems to get stuck in the passing gear. It will shift into it no problem but will not shift out of it unless I get off of the gas.

Are you still getting an engine misfire code? The rule of thumb is engine problems especially if it sets off a odb-ii DTC error code must be resolved first before going on to possible 4T65E tranny problems. Certain conditions such as misfire will cause driveability problems by forcing the PCM to go to Limp-In (limp home) mode. It may change transmission line pressure to the shift and pressure control solenoids, etc.

The codes have been cleared and will not come back. Went to a tranny shop and had them inspect it. The fluid is badly burned and there is metal in the pan. They are doing further inspection of it now.

Thats good there are no more DTC codes. Out of curiousity when was the last time you had the tranny serviced with new ATF and filter?

On the tranny shop just make sure they don't take you for a ride and cause you to spend big bucks. Tranny shops always tell you the fluid is badly burned and there are metal shavings. Have them scan the PCM for generic and GM specific DTC tranny related error codes.

Some small metal shavings (silvery particles) is normal and just indicates normal wear n tear. Dextron -III tranny fluid at 75K miles always looks bad or smells burnt.

To give some advice on tranny shops...in april i had tranny replaced by a major chain tranny shop...Same exact diagnosis...i was told the fluid was badly burnt and have metal shavings in pan...normally these shops charge you a diagnostic fee to tell the problem....At this point they are setting you up to tell you tranny is shot, and needs new unit....At such a big repair i would try to get a second opinon....if second shop tells you the same then you can choose who you like to do the repair. After you get a verbal quote for the repair, ask to get that same quote in writing, and also to return to you all your old parts...also at the end of the job ask for a detailed receipt..Doing all of this will show them that you know your rights as a customer and, they may think twice before screwing you...Good Luck

There have been real horror stories concerning the 4T65E tranny not only in the GP but Regal and Century forums. This one poor guy went through a total of 3 trannies/rebuilds. Poor or harsh shifting and a whining sound due to high line pressure. Total expenditure was around $3500.

To make a long story short it turned out to be his CAT convertor and a PCM problem making the tranny look bad. Plus too many of us fall prey to GM claims that the first tranny service is not due until 100K miles. I do all of my "W" body cars religiously at 50K miles and have reaped the benefits. Knock on wood. :lol2:

I am having the same problem with my 2002 Grand Prix. Was told the code came up as fuel pump so had it replaced but same problem was there. Turns out that it is the Catalyctic Converter and spark plugs. The Cat. Conv is covered under warranty but the tune up is not.
