Probably a simple question, but i started my 93 Cutlass Supreme the other day (150k) and it revved up 3k-4k rpm on its own and wouldnt go down to idling. put it in reverse and it floored itself out of the lot. brake was very jammed and practically impossible to stop. definitely not driveable right now. please help

I don't know what it might be, but good luck on figuring it out.

Two things to check, Mass airflow sensor may be dirty or you have a vacuum leak. Most common cause of runaway idle.

Mine had that problem also and it was a vacuum leak, more precisely, it was the intake manifold gasket had a leak. Try tightening those bolts just a little, never want to over tighten them, and see if that helps some. If there is any improvement, then new gaskets may be in order. The chevy dealer down the road found the problem for me, I had thought it was computer related and it hadn't crossed my mind it might be as simple as vacuum. He said that the gasket going bad was more common on the 3.4L than just a vacuum hose going bad. Since I know the guy, he only charged me the time it would have taken to diagnose a vacuum line and let me buy a less costly gasket set at the parts store. Said they normally charge 3 to 4 hundred to fix it. Then he put the gasket on after hours.

take some carb cleaner and spray it around your intake and all vacuum lines and it will pick up idle when you get to the leak ,,if it idles to high to find the leak then use water and it will dye down when it comes to the leak ,,but it sounds like you may have a bad IAC motor Idle speed controller,,,check it for codes,,also when you put it into reverse and you have a bad motor mount it will make then engine lean foforward and pullon the throttle cable making it have even more throttle.

also check the cable. I've had the cable stick , and have seen it Off ot's track causing this too. but does sound like MAF or TPS. Try unpluging them one at a time and starting it up. sometimes it will stop the trouble if the bad parts unhooked. Good Luck
