wheel bearings

my gf has a 95 and i just bought her a new tire and i asked them to do a courtesy check. i was told that her wheel bearing are shot on both sides. the estimate i got for this job was 447.19 parts/labor. whats the average price for a job like this or is it possibly something i could do on my own. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanx
