Finished the rear yesterday, and all i can say is wow! The swap is definitely worth all the trouble to get the damn thing on there (it was my 1st time). Posi is awesome. Wrightz28, the brakes work pretty good, better than before, but i know they can work better than what they are doing now. I'll be for know, consider i don't have that much power, i don't really need maximum stopping performance yet, like i said, they are way better than with the drum brake setup, and that without changing a prop valve or master cylinder on a 87 iroc. And thats with a brake line barely holding (changing it today, had to replace brake line on driver side because it wasn't there, and when we put the rear on, the pass side desided to go, it wouldn't screw well be it was rusted, but it's holding). I'm glad, it was a worthy swap, and anyone with a 3rd gen, if you come across a 4th gen rear for cheap, don't pass it up. You can get lucky, just find someone who doesn't know what there talking about :evillol: . I even did a brake torque, to test the posi, and that was just awesome, didn't do it too long because of the brake line, but both tires where spinning, never felt that beforem feel like a get more traction.

Nobody cares, get a life.(was supposed to be the 'gives' smiley' but I see it's been disabled.
j/k man. Good to hear that it seems ok. I was just taking a cautious approach at the brakes, relax.

No, wrightz28, you are absolutely right about everything you said, i'm definitely not knocking you. I can definitely tell that the brakes need more pressure, but i was shocked because everyone said you would need a new master cylinder and prop. valve to get the rear brakes to work at all. I just didn't have the money at the time of the swap (still don't it was thursday) to get the other two items, and when i hopped in the car, it stops better than before, i even ran it up to 60 and stopped and it stops really good, don't have to put feet to the firewall anymore.
Tcfco, my only tip to you is to make sure you eat, and have atleast one person there to help you out. And soemthing that will make it easier to take out rusted bolts. I'm hurting right now because of the bolts. It's pretty much a plug and play deal. Take off the following in this order, it will make it much easier, because i didn't do it this way, which made it so f'ing hard. Driveshaft, torque arm, shocks, then control arms, and it should fall, of cousre watch the brake lines hooked to the car and you can still use the current junction from the rear on there. It's weird, the damn thing seemed complete interchangeable, i was amazed at how easier it was. The 2% left is trying ti find out how to hook up the ebrake. There are these little bracket that surround the rubber part and the cable, and i can't get them to fit, which why i need those mounts from a 4th gen car, becuase the 3rd gen are to small, and i'm home free.

I know what you're talking about, does a number on my knees to, for trying to lean over all the way. The worst one til this day is when i was under the car doing something and the damn ratchet fell out my hands and hit me inthe forehead, right above the eye, hurt like a mofo.

hehehehehe....yup......happens all the time. It gets tough holding on to the friggin things when your hands are all greasy. Good times though. I just dont like fluid being dumped all over me. It happened with radiator fluid in a taurus. I drained the radiator but it still had some in there and it dumped all over me. Then the gas from the fuel filter....gasoline really starts to burn after a while of being on your skin.....oh and my favorite.....hot motor oil.....was changing my oil and i did a motor flush that you dump in and run it for 5 minutes or so....gets hot and when i took the oil filter off after draining the pan it dumped and ran all down my arm.....i crawled out of there so fast.....that is some hot stuff.... ahhhh but live and learn....as long as it dosent kill me.

ya theres nothing like having hot liquid poured all on your face and dropping tools on your head.but hey thats a part of working on your own car...we decided to do the swap in two days one day take out the rear and the next put it in...im in no hurry to get it in so i was just going to take my time.I got lucky with the ebrake the guy i bought the rear from had it in a third gen and he is going to ship me the cable he used.

Damn, good for you tcfco, tell me how your car pulls once you get it one there, i haven't given it WOT yet, waiting to get home now so i can install the other brake line. Hot motor oil is a favorite, i got a really bad rash onetime from antifreeze. But the most painful was when my grandmother battery was acting up, the battery terminal was all oxidized, and i pop it up some battery acid was all hard and cruddy around the terminal, that shit got in my eye and it started burning. I was scared, that i be blind, flush my eye for about 5 mins, and was good as new.
92zcamaroperson
08-02-2005, 03:15 PM
yeah supposedly acid isnt as bad to get in your eye as a base. Like if clorox or draino got in your eye. I got rust converter in my eye once. Bad stuff lemme tell ya. But its an acid and it was a very weak one at that so nothing was wrong. Just hurt....a lot....

I got some fiberglass insulation stuck in my eye a couple of years ago from a rash of heater cores (3 in a row) that came up as side jobs for much needed extra cash. Had to have my eye lid cut open to get it out, that sucked. Still twitches uncontrollably.
Got pissed once with a radiator petcock that was partially plugged. with 1/2 an hour left to get the car off the lift, so I figured I'd yank the lower hose since it was being replaced anyway. Well, it put up a fight, then gave up and I got a NICE hot sticky smelly bathing. Of course the numerous oil filter showers, although I've mastered the spin time on that one, now I barely get a drop off the filter.
Eh, oh yeah, first diff fluid change, hair half down my back, didn't realize somebody kicked the cath container and half my head became a mop full of used 90 weight, talk about smellen like a man.
My personal favorite, my first rear brake job. The drum would not come off. For two hours I beat on it, tugged and twisted, pryed, and the bastard wouldn't move. Finally got cold and tired enough, went indside rested up a bit and ate. Came back out and assumed maximum body torque position and the damn thing came off like it was being held on by a two month old. Flew straight back into the storage shelves, they dumped on all over me, had the damn drum fly into my face along the way, etc. Now that's learning the hard way.

lol, that wrench is only good to keep in a tool box that you take with you places, as its small and can fit lots of bolts, (be able to make a quick repairs with out a 1000lb tool chest filled with tools) other wise i would never use one

Tcfco - You are correct. It wasn't really that hard, but with all the rusted bolts under neath, that breaker bar came in handy. It's pretty much un bolt everything and bolt back up. Wasn't really that time consuming either, about 8 hours all together. I know i said 15 at 1st, but i just realized that half of that time was spent on getting the head lightswitch in place. Electrical is hard as shit and very fustrating.
Rally Sport 92 - I have a garage my self, but you can't get cars in there because it cluttered, tools scattered, my grandfathers race wagon, junk parts, lots of junk parts. We just work in the back yard, it'a all black top.
Instantkevin - As soon as i get the web at home (thank giod, it only took 6 years to geta computer) and a cheap digi cam, i'll finally post pics of my car, may be awhile though. About the way the wheels look, it actually looks really good if you ask me. The way people made it seem was that the tire was going to be sticking out like crazy. Like tcfco said, it's makes it look like you have fat tires in the back, and a very nice looking mean stance from the back, feels like i get more traction too. The tires barely pass the fender, it does look good. But if it where like that up front, it would like very ugly. So for the back, its great.

:lol2: Seems like we're the same, except that I got 2 garage doors, and there's like a bunch of boxes and stuff on the left, so I can only go in on the right, but At the end of the garage is a freezer, so I cant go in all the way, and to the right as well, there's a couple of dressers and a washing machine. So I got to turn my car to the left and I obviously dont have alot of space there. Also if I fit my car nicely into the garage I can BARELY fit it in so the garage door closes, but soon we'll get rid of the freezer, so in the Camaro goes.

Same deal here. Would also make working in the winter 3000% better. I'm telling you, when i got my car in Feb. and the alternator died, it sucked so bad chaning that shit inm the cold, and i mean cold. You probably don't even get snow, so you don't have to worry about that, do you. I can change an alternator in live 4 mins. now. Before it use to be like 2 hours.

No we dont have to worry about snow, BUT I will say that Feb is one of the COLDEST months we got in Texas, im serious because it always snows like the first 3 weeks of that month, so in one of those three weeks we'll get like 3-7 days of snow, no more or less so far. Funny thing is that this year it was FREAKING COLD, I was working my ass off to get my Camaro started cause I love my baby.
