Hey, I installed a DC sports replica shortshifter last night along with some energy suspension bushings. It shifts nice and short and i'm loving it, but i am having some problems.
The shifter feels extremely sloppy. I can move it left and right pretty far, even when its in gear. Anyone know what I did wrong?
Not really a problem but I also don't like how high the shifter sits. I feel like i'm driving a truck or something.

On the cheaper aftermarket shifters the ball on the shifter is too small. This allows play from the knob to the linkage.
P.S. make sure your bolts are torqued to spec.:sun:

ok, i put these spacers in that came with the short shifter (thought they were extra bearings :D ), and now the sloppiness is gone.
I don't know if its my newbie driving skills or maybe my tranny, but when I'm shifting hard into second sometimes it wont go in (at all) and I end up making a fool of myself. And when i do get it in 2nd at high rpms I almost always grind a little. Am i just shifting to late or what?
I usually shift around 7000-7200, but the weird thing is.. when i hit the recall on my tach it sometimes says 7500 or almost 7800. Don't know if thats actually were i shifted or my tachs accuracy is off

Have the same problem shifting into 2nd. Grinds a little, almost every time. Someone said that when they put in their short-shifter, they put in new Energy Suspension bushings, and it took care of the problem...

Mine does the same thing.
Except it grinds into 3rd ... every time ....

Alright,
To answer to digitalcivic about not being able to go into second when shifting hard has to do with the short shifter. Your stock shifter has a long throw for a reason. It allows your syncro in the tranny to syncronize the motors revolutions with the tranny. A lightened flywheel would help you problem but not fix it. To fix your problem let the shifter fall in to gear don't force it in faster then the tranny can take it. Watch out forcing it into second you could drop you tranny.

alright, thanks for the help guys. I think i'm going to look around for a new tranny. (i have a dx one and need an si anyways). I have always grinded going into 2nd, even with my stock shifter. Tranny has about 92,000 miles on it, so its prolly startin to go.
Another question. I dont like the way my shifter sits so high. I wanted a shortshifter to shorten the throws and to let my knob sit a little lower. My knob is actually sitting at stock height (if not higher).. and it feels like i'm driving a truck. Is it possible to cut it down a little (so there is no space between the knob and boot), or will that cause stiffness and more grinding.
thanks

The MOMO shift knobs don't need threads so you can cut down your shifter. We did this to my friends stock shifter.

I put a short shifter in awhile ago, and poly bushings, and I must say, the RULE. Best $40 I've spent on my car yet. (groupbuycenter.com for the shifter $30, summitracing.com for the bushings $10)

two things, when you say you usually shift at 7,200, do you mean when your racing. cuz that seems kinda high for just cruising down the street. second, about the shift height, i saw somewhere how you could cut it down, then remake the screw part, i'll try to find that if i can. good luck.

dont slam it into 2nd or any gear. Smoothly but quicky w/ a slight pause in neutral. No more grinding or if you have higher mileage you might want to consider 2nd & 3rd gear w/ synchro replacement. Do a clutch w/ light weight fly wheel.
DC is rip-off
I have Hurst installed w/ bushings its longer than most on the market. brings it closer to the driver, but the throw is not real short

i have a friend with Del Sol Vtec and he took his factory shifter, cut it below the pivot point, and welded in a 1/2" socket for a spacer. his throw is fuckin wicked. you all should try it. its a lot cheaper than buying one and you can make the throw as short as you want

Cutting down the shifter only makes it farther a way from the driver. It's the ball on the shifter that determines how short the throw is

what are you talking about you jackass, lol. the ball on the short shifter is a pivot point. its the lenght below the ball that determines its throw. longer on the bottom means shorter throws. the shorter the longer teh throws.
i even compared my short shifter to my stock shifter. and the part below the ball was longer
