New overhead console..:P

Well, I tracked down the elusive audiovox custom overhead console made for the 95-to current blazer/jimmy/bravada (2 and 4 door). (NO, this will not work in your regular cab or your extended cab as it is way to farking long)

Why did I do this? Well I installed a Pioneer AVH-6500DVD unit with an AVIC-88 GPS system. Well, not wanting to leave the people in the backseat out of the pic I contemplated how to go about mounting monitor(s) in the back. Do I cut my overhead console down and install a universal and have it look like ass, , or do I cut into my leather head rests for head rest monitors. Buying 2 monitors for the back plus the one I'm putting in my passenger side visor would have been expensive as hell and to be honest I did't want to cut into my leather. I want it so I can pull it out if I ever get rid of the truck (unlikely as that is).

So after talking to several sound shops, it was "rumoured" that audiovox used to make a blazer specialtyfit overhead console. I talked to Audiovox and the presales people were clueless. So after some long and hard searching I tracked down a place that happened to have 20 or so in stock that really never sold. I bought a graphite one (they have gray and tan as well). I then went in search of a Audiovox 6.8 VOH to fit in it. Found it cheap. So all in all it came out pretty well.

Specialty fit console: 60.00 (These are no longer made but I can get more if anyone wants them)
6.8 VOH 650 series drop down monitor $50.00 (used but never run)
hot melted Abs shavings in my face and hair... Free

On to the pics...

Here is the console out of the box. Not shown is the big assed mounting bracket it attaches to.

Now, you have to seperate the trim ring from your old overhead console (simply remove the screws) and then cut out the dome light (The monitor has a dome light in it). You're left with the rear light section and the front garage door/sunglass/cd-tissue section. Both these slip on to the new over head console and screw down.

So here we see the length of the new ohc with the monitor up. (this monitor also includes on screen display, extra audio/video inputs and outputs and a remote. Supports wireless headphones.

And with the monitor down....

And Finally... The visor monitor installed and all the monitors lit up. (wireless headphones all around make it complete!)

All in all, this turned out damn spiffy!

rlith,

Read your article, it's great!
I need a console asap and an LCD Overhead monitor that fits. I guess the one you listed (Audiovox 6.8 VOH) is the one I should be getting?
Please let me know if you could get them for me. It's a Xmas gift for the wife..
