dosent a posi rear end have a whine because it has cut gear? Im just repeating something that someone told me. I dont know what cut gears means. And did all z28's come with aluminum driveshafts? Thanks for your help.

Get under your car.. see if the driveshaft is all rusty and nasty, if so its steel. And my posi (well... limited slip) doesnt whine

as far as i know, only 1le models came with aluminum driveshafts.

The only third gens that came with aluminum driveshafts were the 1le cars, which was rare. If you would like a aluminum one though. Let me know and I can get one for your car for ya.

You polished geno's shaft? (sounds so wrong) Man I woulda paid you some extra for mine if I would of known you could have done that.

FormulaLT1
08-01-2005, 10:08 PM
I was actually just kidding about that. I just wiped it down but those are easy enough to shine up. You just take a brillo pad or some steel wool and some detergent and just go to work. They come out real shinny. To actually use a dremel or die grinder to polish one of those would take a while and the brillo or steel wool will get similiar results.

Gah, I'm so gullable. Yeah, I saw this one guy polished the heck out of his with a dremel. Looked like a mirror after he was finished. I wouldn't mind mine looking like that, but there's no way I'm going to spend that much time on it. Got better things to do than to be strokin my shaft :icon16:

where do you get them from? can they hold up to high hp/tq numbers? how much do you sell them for? got them for 4th gens?

I buy them in bulk from a F-body salvage yard. So I am able to sell them cheaper than you could get them directly. I usually order 3 - 6 at a time and they are plenty strong. There are cars running 9's and 10's on LS1 3 inch aluminum driveshafts and yes they are direct replacements for your 4th gen and 3rd gens. I can also get the 1le style but the LS1 is lighter and stronger, so that would be the one I would recommend besides they are both made by three rivers for GM. I sell them on ebay all the time and they usually sell for right around 190 shipped, as you can see by a few of my auctions http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33738&item=7982285784 , http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7983284948&category=33738 but I sell them to members here and people I know outside ebay for 150 shipped.

what if you get a new rearend tho? with it still bolt right up? i guess as long as you dont change the distance between the tranny and the rearend it should still reach..

FormulaLT1
08-02-2005, 07:21 AM
The new rear would still attach to the rear U-joint and yes unless the dimensions changed, it would be the same size shaft.

No biggie, if you want one let me know. If not, no big deal. I only get them in when someone needs them, so I am not trying to sell off a supply of them I have.

Sounds sweet. Yeah my driveshaft is rusty....darn....Let me get some cash together and ill let you know. I gotta pay for school soon so Ill have to figure something out. Its a fairly loud whine. I thought it was my bearings in the front but then I replaced them when I did the brake job. Its most loud when i take my foot off the gas and slow down. Its not extremely loud or anything but it is there. Could be the transmission for all I know. I should just go ahead and have my tranny fluid changed.

Thats something else to ask....Someone told me not to flush the tranny just change the fluid. This was at a car show and there was a lot going on so I didnt get to ask why. I also wanted to change my differential oil. Is that a simple non huge mess making and time consuming (less than 5 hours) kinda ordeal? Ive never messed with a rear end before. Maybe it will get rid of the whine.

Whining from a rearend is usually a sign that the differential isnt setup properly. Some gearsets are just noisy but when they are setup right, they usually sound like a factory rearend.

not to be an a$$ for trying to take busniess away from you FormulaLT1 but i got my aluminum driveshaft for 50.00, just look around the internet or a 4th gen site and get a used one from them.50 is pretty cheap for a aluminum driveshaft.i seen them any where from 30-100 most of the time.

FormulaLT1
08-02-2005, 08:18 PM
Thats a great deal and by all means. If you can get them that cheap jump on them. I never got one that cheap.

Is it the 1le or ls1?

perverts all talking about shafts and crap...

same driveshaft for z28 is for the 6er?

FormulaLT1
08-02-2005, 08:40 PM
The 6's and v8's use the same length shaft. (you may have to swap the yokes but I doubt it).

mine came from an ls1...is the 1le a 3inch like the ls1

FormulaLT1
08-02-2005, 09:06 PM
No, the 1le is 2.5 inches and weights 12.2 - 12.5 lbs. So you got the much better of the 2. Also the LS1 is rated to handle more torque.. You got a sweet deal.

Viper_Storm
08-02-2005, 11:31 PM
i was checking out your e-bay post and it says "98-02 LS1 F-body with either 3.23 or 3.42" what are those numbers at the end? 3.23 & 3.42?

FormulaLT1
08-02-2005, 11:46 PM
Those are gear ratio's. LS1 f-body's with 2.73 gears or the rare 2.93 gears had steel unbalanced shafts. Only the 3.23 geared Auto's and 3.42 geared Manuals got the aluminum balanced shafts.

Viper_Storm
08-02-2005, 11:50 PM
so if you have a 98 - 02 LS1 Fbody then you already have the aluminum driveshaft?

FormulaLT1
08-02-2005, 11:53 PM
No, not always. If you have a Auto without the performance rear axle package. You would have had 2.73's or 2.93's and those cars got steel 16 lb unbalanced driveshafts.

oh, i see now if i have the car with 3.23 auto and the 3.42 manual, then i already have that shaft? but other wise i would need that shaft? or aleast i can use it... lol, that part wasnt all that clear in your ebay auction.

oh, you know what i miss read you auction post... im sorry, it is acctually clear as day... lol, the numbers threw me off and that just f-ed me all up i thought it was something like if you had higher gears then that then the shaft wouldnt work right on your car or something :S i donno, those numbers just messed me all up.

Formula, wouold i be able to use one? When mine was off during the swap, it was fu****** brown, rusted as the way around. Know there is a whine/grinding noise coming from the tranny/driveshaft area. Makes the noise while in park, so i know it's not the rear, i think something loose down there, but i think i will get on one your shafts in the future  .

FormulaLT1
08-03-2005, 10:42 AM
Yeah, the shafts will fit your car and I would check your torque converter bolts, you may have a loose one or you could very well have a broken tranny mount if that hasn't been changed in a while.

Link85x
08-03-2005, 12:41 PM
That i will do.

88camaroproject
08-03-2005, 12:57 PM
my tranny mount was busted in 2, i just replaced it and it was making a funny noise because the tranny would hit the exhaust and it would rumble everywhere. but its all good now cause i replaced the mount.

88camaroproject
08-03-2005, 01:00 PM
oh and usually trucks rear ends will whine. so if you swapped your rear with a truck thats why. its cause there gears are cut flat cause its stronger or something. and its easy to change the rear end fluid. i did it in about 2 hours i think. the hardest part is filling it up. the gear oil needs to have a tube on the bottle lol. would make life easier.

08-03-2005, 01:06 PM
Naw, rear came from 94 Trans Am (wish i could of taking his car instead :evillol:). Yeah, my pops basically cut some rubber hose, small enough to fit in the hole, and dumped it in that way. Tranny mounts are porbably broke, gotta check when i get home. Should of saw how much shit under was broken, but the under carriage looks very f***** good for an 87, there is barely any rust.

yeah 92zcamaroperson.. my 90 iroc has the same rear end as yours i believe.. 10 bolt 3.23 posi. I also hear a whine back there but usually when im on the highway.. not really on the street.. a friend of mine said it could be the clutches.. Not sure what those are.. but hopefully the whining isnt a bad thing.. I just got the car so i dont know how its suppose to sound.. did yours do that all along? or just start doing it.?

Formula, maybe a little of topic, got any connections to where i could get some 87-92 GTA Rims for cheap? Looking for some and have asked around, but everyone one wants around $600 for them, no tire included.

Also a hum or light metalic rasping sound could be nothing more than your posi additive wore down cause it hasn't been changed in a while or it could be from your clutch pack in your posi rear end is worn and will probably fail soon. Either way a fluid change with posi additive will buy you some time if not fix the problem all together. This is ofcourse unless your running gears rich in nickel which usually are noisey regardless of what you do.

As soon as one of our admins logs on. We are going to just go ahead and make the changes. No need for a vote we pretty much all agreed anyway so whats the point of having a poll on it?.

Its been whining since i got the car. How often should fluid be changed in the rear? Im still in the process of finding out what all has been done to the car. The dealer guy is supposed to be getting all of the information from the previous owner. The guy couldve put 3.73's in the thing for all i know. And as for the rest of the car ????? I can just see a few aftermarket parts when I open the hood which i have in my sig. Im taking the car to the track on friday so we will see what she can really do.

Thats cause it seemed like everyone pretty much came to a agreement on what we wanted. So I have been waiting for one of our admins to pop there heads back in and then I was just going to ask for them to update it.. Unfortantly that hasn't been the case lately but the change will be made sometime in the not too distant future.

Well, the easiest way to tell what you got back there, is to open it up to change the fluid and see what you got. Normally it says right on the ring gear how many teeth it has and how many the pinion has but if not you just take the ring gear tooth number and divide by how many teeth the pinion gear has.
