Other than the dealer wanting me to come and overpay for ATF, Why is it that I am supposed to use Honda ATF in my 93 civic's transaxle?
Why can't i just get the aftermarket stuff that says on the back it is okay for honda?
I've already drained my trans twice and put in aftermarket fluid. What symptoms should I be watching for?

aftermarket fluid that says it works with Honda should be fine, especially if its from a reputable company. The difference between different ATF's is the density, which is necessary that it be correct if the transmission is going to work properly. If not filled with the correct fluid the torque converter will likely not engage properly (either too fast or too slow) and would shift too late or early or not at all.

the internal workings of an auto trans is greek to me. I don't know much about them, although I do know what a tourqe converter looks like, anyway
my 93 civic has been having some hesitation when steping on the gas when pulling out. i've changed the plugs, fuel filter and air filter already.
what I am wondering is, could the trans be trying to pull out in D instead of 1? because when i really slam down on the gas, then the hesitation goes away and you can feel the trans downshift.
i forget what brand ATF i got. I do know it was one of the cheaper ones.

it sounds like you have low line pressure in your transmission, this could be caused by gunk blocking up a line or slowing down the pump.

With respect to type of transmissin fluid, I starting using Amsoil ATF in all of my cars....great stuff...lasts 3 times as long. It is expensive, but after learning more about how conventional tranny fluids breaks down, I was sold. It cost me about $90 for my Volvo 740, but the car never shifted better! I flushed the entire system and dropped the pan, too, My dealer's website is www.lubedealer.com/jtubbs if you want to learn more. Remember, you get what you pay for!
