GP gt 2001 transmission?

My GT is having tranny probs, I think. If I baby her she drives fine, but if I stomp on the gas, she goes fine, but revs up into the high 6000's and doesn't want to shift to the next gear unless I let off the gas. Could it be a problem with the shift solenoid?
In higher gears (3rd at 70 mpg), the car won't rev above 4K RPM - sucks for passing...Could it be a cat, 70,000 miles, any thoughts? I have noticed a smell from the exhaust that I haven't smelled before, but it isn't terribly strong. On another maybe unrelated note, I also notice the drink holder/center armrest area gets very hot lately.

You could have a problem developing with the cat since you said the odor has changed. The location of the cup holder is directly over the cat so that may indicate that it is overheating. As for the shifting issue, put in a can of high quality transmission additive to see if it cures the problem. Also if you haven't changed the fluid and filter lately it is probably time to do so.

So...thanks much for the reply. I changed the fluid and filter at 50K, but I guess I will try the additive before going to Pontiac for the tranny. I have been reading a lot in the forums lately, and I think it could be the cat. The armrest does get super hot - with the cup holder open a hot draft comeout of the space (bottom of cup holder meets console when open) that can make you say "wow" if it catches you off-guard. I have started to direct an AC vent that direction lately :-D

The odo just turned 70K so I may make an appointment with Pontiac just to get that looked at.

Thanks much!

If it is not under warranty why take it back to the dealer. A good mechanic or muffler shop can check the cat and let you know if it is bad. I am not a dealer fan. They have their place, warranty work, and there are some parts that only the dealer can get but you will pay far less somewhere else. If the cat is still under warranty by all means go back to the dealer if not save some money and go someplace else.

I took it to a transmission place today (someplace I trust), and they said the tranny was perfect. SO I calle dthe dealer, and the service guy suspects it is the cat. I drop it off there tomorrow....thank god!

I'm going to have them do the "96000" mile service. It's a little early, but I don't have much free time at the moment (even 5 mins is tough), and I am commuting 160 miles a day so I need it to hold up for a while. Might as well be proactive, right? :-)

96K service = air filter, PCV, fuel filter, tune-up, tire rotate/balance (I know I could do all this, but it would take me almost 1/2 a day, plus the time spent at Autozone waiting in a line because of slow cashier).
and they do more, I can't recall now, oil change, etc.
