87 Shift Indicator help

Hello all!

I have a 1987 T Bird V6 Coupe w Auto Trans and the shift indicator is all out of whack. Shows P when it is really in Drive etc...how can I get to the indicator to check it out?

im not recalling where the indicator is on the 87 . is it a floor shift or column shift and is the indicator instrument mounted or console mounted?

Sorry for the lack of detail.

It is column shift and the indicator is in the instrument panel, just above the steering column.

take the lower cover off under the steering column and the bolts that hold the column up to the dash lower the column and there should be a string hooked to the shift collar you can adjust the indicator there or adjust the linkage at trans BTW at the trans is easier/look for bushings on the shift linkage that are probably worn out
