Hi everyone,
Believe it or not i own a 1984 Firebird with a 2.5L 4 Cylinder engine. I know hard to believe but true. Mom gave it to me when they moved to florida to retire. Anyway, Lately the tachometer (5 speed manual) has been "bouncy" when i have been cruiseing down the hiway. The speedometer is steady so i know its not hte transmission. Where does the Tach receive its input. IS it totally electrical and from where oe is it mechanical like the speedo cable?
Thanks
Mike

I remember this being asked on another Firebird forum (I think), and it seems like it wound up being the cable or gears in the cable were dry and had lost lubrication, making the needle bounce. Cant remember if it was tach or speedo, but Im sure theyre the same basically.

I've heard of problems like this happening on third gens. Haven't heard of the rpm gauge doing it though, normally it's the speedo that does it. But it's probably the same sort of deal. As CDJr said, the cable probably needs lube. Unattach it from the back of the gauge cluster and let a few drops of oil slide down the cable. then just reconnect it. I know this is easier said than done, but it should work.
BTW, completely off topic.. But can you take a few pics of your engine. I've always wondered what a 4cyl looks like in a camaro, but can never find pics of it. I'd really appreciate it man.

Thanks for the help guys but the Tachometer is electrical on the back of the dash not mechanical. Only the Speedo is mechanical and yes it needs to be greased otherwise its noisy. the 1986 was the first year for Electrical Speedos....
Second, how dare an enthusist call my Firebird a "Camaro" :nono:  No true Firebird owner would ever say that they are the same
I will though see if i can post the picture as it sits in a "Firebird". I have never posted a picture so give me alittle bit...
Thanks all so far, and any more help would be appreciated..
