I search to see if anyone posted but it seems that noone has, so here it goes. If it has sorry.
anyway, this is so cool, I can't stop plotting locations. I love the way it zooms in to areas.

It's pretty neat, I've had it a few months.
Bill Gates put out Terra Server years ago. It has been downsized big time in that past years. I remember looking at my house almost in perfect view... Now I can hardly make out my neighborhood.
I guess the Government caught wind of it.

I love the fact that I can tilt the terrain and zoom in like I am flying over the neighborhood. It reminds me of the old Microsoft Flight Simulator program.

A friend looked for the communication towers on top of Mt. Wilson but couldn't find them. He looked for a few other potential military targets but couldn't find them either. They're probably blocked out.

Google Earth is awesome, but they should update it though, it's at least 7 months old, and older, there's a road near me that opened 6 months ago, it's a huge highway, and google earth shows it still in construction.
Still awesomeage though.

Not all of it is that old, and I'm sure it's constantly being updated. It's just that you can't get sattelite images for the entire earth whenever you want to. Eventually, they'll update the images of the highway, but meanwhile, images of other areas will get stale.
This used to be called Keyhole LT which I downloaded last year sometime. Was pretty damn cool. I always like looking at Vegas. You can also find Area 51.

this thing is pretty cool. i downloaded it at work yesterday and started messing around with it. my boss came in and got mad at me at first. then realized i was actually doing my job (GIS Analyst) and messing around with maps and stuff like that. In the July/August version of Earth Imaging Journal there is an article that compares Google Earth to Microsoft's Virtual Earth, (virtualearth.msn.com). it's pretty neat, they have teamed up with a company called Pictometry that does aerial photograph but also shoots at a 45 degree angle which will let you get more of a 3-D effect.
ahhh i can feel the inner geek coming out in me

KEYHOLE!! I FUCKING KNEW I'D USED THIS BEFORE!!!
It felt so familiar.
Anyways, this dominates Worldwind, except for its dumb backwards scroll thing.
Look up the whitehouse - it's mosaic'd. Why?

it's mosaic'd for security reasons. just like the pentagon. even if you were to use Google's map system (http://maps.google.com) they are still mosaic'd. unless there is some other reason that i'm totally missing it's for security purposes.

As far as I know, you can't, but you can scroll your mouse around until the desired co-ordinates (or close to) are displayed, then zoom in :)
As for the updating, the Google site says all pictures are between new and 3 years old, and are all updated every 3 years.

as far as putting in coordinates, i figured it out. it was mostly to use the ones supplied in this thread to check out some places, just had to add a comma between the two. i'm sure you could type out the coordinates in MS word or something then copy and paste.
for someone like me, this is a VERY interesting and cool program. i work with things like this all the time at work trying to maintain our 15,000 + electricity poles.
