86 celica no start

Hello all, my son's gt died on him during a 1-2 upshift. It cranks, has spark but no-go. Engine is a 2se mated to a 5 spd. i hear no hum from the fuel tank, is this where the pump is?. Also how can I check the spark timing to see if the belt has skipped or do they just break? Is there a fuel pressure test port? where would I find the fuel pump relay? I'm really stumped here as I have no import experience, any and all suggestions greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance, wife wants her parking spot back! Have a great weekend everyone, Iain.
