Urgent question about spun bearing

Ok, so i have the chance to buy a 96 vr4 with mods, rebuilt tranny, rebuilt top end, for $7600. The thing is, the rod bearing were all replaced, because one spun, the crank was not replaced, but it was micro polished, and everything was caught very early on. How long do you guys think it will go before it spins aagain and i have to replace the crank, and how hard is it to replace the crank, if i have all the tools, an engine crane, but no lift?. Is it worth buying if i dont have the $$ to fix it right away??

Well if it spun you "need" to machine the block and crank. Unless they ment it was about to spin and they had the work done. However, for 7600 it sounds like it would be a good deal as long as it in decent shape. A used engine will only run you 2-3 grand if you do the labor to replace it yourself. So then you would have a running 96 vr4 with some mods for 10 grand.

what about the block would need machining, and what machining on the crank would be of anygood, and why do you bring up these ideas and then solve the problem with a new-used engine?

If the bearing spun it will damage the block and the crank. The way to fix them is to have them machined so they are smooth again, then you use oversized bearings.

I then said to just buy a used engine because it is often cheeper to just buy a used engine instead of fixing yours.

The thing is, the engine just had headwork done, and 3 new pistons, and its not even broken in yet. JonVr4 from the 3si forums offers smallblocks for 1800, i was thinking of having him do the work, and see if i cant come out ahead seein as there are so many new parts in the engine.

if it truly spun, the rod and the crank will be damaged. You should get a New rod and at the least the crank should be turned not polished. The block however wont' be damaged from a spun bearing.

This is the problem about them not geting the block and crank machined... first when you spin a rod or "throw" there is alot of things that can happen. The pistons could start to hit the head chiping metal. Or the bearing it self can start to get grinded up and cause the metal to get in the oil. or the crank it self be scraped and metal get in the oil. NOW, enough said once you get metal in the oil you MUST get the block machined. Because though you can replace it all and it will work fine for a bit, but after a while all that bits of metal will turn into millions of bits of metal looking like silver glitter in your oil, and that will begin to destroy your egine.
I had the same problem... i spun a bearing chiped my head and destroyed my crank... but its something that has to be done... and i caught mine early too...
