Bad Starter Recognition
How do you know if your starter is going bad?

If you can't start a car after you have run it for a while - That's it....it's the starter. Usually when they start to go bad they do so by seizing up when they get hot from the engine heat. Then they just barely begin to crank, pause and then they run.

So what you do now? hmmm...you go and get yourself a brand new one from a Motorcraft. If you are thinking about getting one of those generic, rebuilt ones - forget about it because if you do you will be changing it at every other oil change or so.

that site is good for info.

Your post almost leads me to believe it may be a fuel pump. But I have some questions first. You say it doesn't start on hot days or after it's been run and get's hot. If it hasn't moved all day and it's really hot, is that when it won't start? Or how about on cooler days when you run it, will it still not start when the engine gets hot?

If the car is driven during a hot day and usually under in town driving conditions, the fuel pump can get hot and no longer work. If you let the car sit and cool down for 30 minutes, or longer in some cases, the car should start and run until the pump gets hot again. This normally doesn't happen on cooler days because you don't have road heat compounding the problem. Running the car out of gas can escalate this problem because it is the fuel that is the primary source of cooling for the pump and when it has been run out of gas, the pump gets hot because there is nothing to cool it. This causes premature failure of the pump.

my question here is are you having a problem that is ENGINE CRANKS OVER FINE, BUT NO START or are you having a problem that is NO CRANK OVER, NO START?

I have the exact same problem with my 96 4.6. my car sits for days at a time because i'm in a cast, but when i do go out to start it, it seems like the battery is dead. after a few tries, it starts up. it only has been doing this during the warmer months.

in that case its probably corrosion on or in the starter itself----if your not jumping it to get it to start

here is something to try for the guys that think that there starter is there primary cause of no start when hot,,,get someone to assist you one under the car and one maning the key,,,hold the key in the crank position and the other guy wack the starter with a hammer a few times if it takes of it is the brushes in the starter are worn out,,this is common on these gear drive type starters for the guys and gals with the no start problem thinking it is fuel related get a spray bottle and turn engine over while another sprays fuel into the intake if it takes off the fuel pump is heating up ,,,in both cases do not buy the generic starters or fuel pumps get geniune motorcraft parts or you will save money now but spend it later. good luck!!
