I have a 200 Cavalier LS 2.4L wit a problem. It starts some of the time but when it wont start, the fuel relay buzzes at a fast rate. I have replaced the fuel Pump ( i could get the car to start if I pounded on the fuel tank). The check engine light has not come on, 12.62vdc at the relay input. Could this be a EC problem?

Hmm... perhaps the relay itself? Cheap to switch that out. Could you be more specific? What happens when you try and start it? Does it kinda turnover, or does it not turnover at all?

Car will engage the starter but it acts like a fuel supply problem. I have been able to start it every time tody but i am leary it will not start when it has to.
The relay was swapped with the AC relay (same one) with the same result. I have looked at the schematic from Chilton and it looks as though the circiut is compleeted to the injectors and the pump.

Is it difficult to start even when it does? Or is it as if there's no problem? I suppose if the engine was running rough, it could be anything from a faulty fuel injector to a O2 sensor. I'm sure your chiltons will tell you how to check the O2 sensors. Any codes coming up?

At 4 pm pst I attempted to start the car. I got crank but no fire. I jumped the real 30-85? and the car did start once. only once. I checked to see the new pump was on, it sounds as though it pumps to presure and shuts off. All thing point to the ECM but I can not get my hands on a diagnosic laptop until Monday. They sure put the ECM in a bad spot! With all this playing, no warning lights have come on, also leading me to think it is the ECM.

i have an 02 cavi and I pulled into the store and the car wouldnt start!!
after about 5 cranks it starts up then It dies of ourse just as I pull out onto the road. It wont start again and I at least got out of the way of traffic. I call for my Hubby to come get me and of course after I call I go and try again and the freaken car starts just fine. well I turn it off to wait then the @&*&#$(^( car wont start. we tow it to a friend house (all this time there was a buzzing under the hood each time we turned the key on but not over) Well we swap relays and that dont work we change fuel filter that dont work. after a few more cranks it starts and drives home PERFECT!! I even drove like a maniac home to try to get it to screw up!

Well I park and turn it over four more times and each time it started right up then fifth time NOTHING sounds like a fuel problem, But NO FIRE.

We changed the Crank shaft position sensor, the Igm and the coils are fine all switches are working fine other than the occasional buzz under the hood.

You can hear the fuel pump priome so we really dont think its the fuel pump, but we are starting to think PCM???

But that is an expensive guess

We have reviewed the manual (95-2000) working on gettign an 02 manual. but WE have exhausted ourselves on this problem there are no codes and the service and check engine lights clear once you turn it over!

I think if its on o2 sensor the car would at least run??? Just really crappy and shouldnt that throw a code???

i know that the IGm should control the fire pattern until 400rpm then the PCm takes over after that. So I would think our car would start and then die, but it wont even fire? it just cranks like it is out of gas but the tank is 3/4 full.

We are very frustrated and Are in desperate need of help. We dont trust the local mechanic in this Small town last time we got the shaft for over 350 bucks that wasnt necessary.

PLEASE HELP!

Guess what...

I have the same problem on my 2000 cavalier 2.2L. I dont know if this thread is dead or what but I would realy apriciate help/solution to problem. So far I have replaced my fuel filter and my fuel pressure regulator and have also purchased an OBD II reader. When I plug the reader into my car it comes up with a comunication error. However the car will run if you put fule down the intake, meaning it is definatly a fuel control issue. I would greatly apriceate help as I have no other way to get to school and school starts on the 6th.

Your problems sounds like either a PCM or wiring problem.

From my experience (former elec.eng/tech) I would say drop the tank and have a close inspection of the connectors powering the fuel pump. For some reason, the connections have the nasty rep of becoming intermittent. Sometimes it's temp sensitive; but most often I see just a plain poorly designed, corrosion prone connection that will usually allow voltage; but will degrade when starting current is needed. Give the cnxns a cooldown; or a few jiggle and shakes, and lo behold the connection might last just long enough to start the car proper, and then loop to error.
If this is indeed the cause for your particular car(s), find a good mech with some creative thinking and ask him/her to "create" a more dedicated connection.
