I discovered today that I can now remove the key from the car without putting it in reverse. Has anyone else had this happen. I have a 2001.

Mine too. I wonder if it's electrical problem. Also my gear shift won't stay in reverse unless I press hard on it.

That would be the trans-lock sencer that is connected to your shifter. You need a new trans-lock.

Could that be also related to the problem I'm having with shifting into reverse gear?

no, the transloc system does this, when you step on the break it will allow the shifter to go into gears, and when the break is not pressed then it will not, but you know, now that i think of it, it is a possabillity. its worth a shot.

You guys had me worried so I tested ours. 3.4L auto.
Can't take the key out until in PARK so it looks normal.
Also the Alero is the first car I've noticed without locking steering wheel. :dunno:

I never noticed that the steering wheel didn't lock. I've had the car for almost three years and just went and checked it. Go figure. Shows how much I pay attention.

We had our rack & pinion changed under warranty a few years ago. My son could not remember whether it ever locked. When we got it back from the dealer I test it out and noticed no steering lock. I thought the dealer screwed up the repair job. Just to be sure I went to a used car dealer where he had an Alero on the lot and acted like I was going to buy it just to see if the steering locked. Found out it was normal but I've never had a car in the last 20 years or so without steering lock. Weird.:dunno:
