PROGRESS: 2005 C6 Corvette

Not very much to report, I could have sworn I brought more pictures than this. Oh well.
The body is primered, the primer is...really rough, I've been sanding on it and it isn't smoothing down. Not sure what went wrong there. Nope, no pics...but imagine a white C6 body.
Started work on the interior, it's actually all but assembled, but the only picture I managed to escape with is the dash:
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/238578C6dash-med.JPG
I've also made a lot of progress with the engine. I decided to do a little basic wiring to this thing:
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/238578C61.JPG
I cut off the molded in ignition wires. The first three are gone, the last one is still there to show the difference.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/238578C62.JPG
Then I drilled a small hole in each port.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/238578C63.JPG
Then viola, wires. Yay!
More later.

awesome. you dont happen to have a scan of the brochure with color choices do you? im not sure what i am going to paint mine

I have the brochure somewhere. You can see all the colors on their website though:
http://www.chevrolet.com/corvette/colors/
If you go to the dealerships, you can get a brochure with chips of all the colors they offer for that year. Best way to match a color hands down.

There really isn't much on the dash that's detailed. All the buttons etc. are the same black plastic as the rest of it. I'll go over my reference pics to doubel check, but I don't think there's that much more detail to be added...?
I really need to get some better pictures.

Oh, don't do that, I love responses in my threads!!
When I went to the dealership, they had a C6 in the shop up on a lift, and I talked one of the shophands into letting me sneak back and take some pictures.
Does the C6 kit come with the HUD?
Yes.
And yes Jaymes, I used Krylon primer. I've always had such good luck with it though!

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/238578c6my2-med.JPG
Painted with Dupont Millenium Yellow. I made the huge mistake of painting it outside, there's a lot of trash in the paint :disappoin It'll have to sit down in College Station for a month while I finish up my internship and take a quick trip to California. In the meantime, I'll try to wrap up the engine/interior/chassis work.

A friend of mine painted his '72 Camaro in Millenium Yellow and had some spare paint :D
I'm going deep sea fishing with my uncle, and driving my gramma back (SoCal to Midland is a two-day stretch!) She's perfectly capable of driving herself, but doesn't want to. Whatever. I'll get back to the body on this one in about a month, hope it's ready for some serious sanding by then!

lol. how did you thin the paint? did you use dupont reducer? i picked up some PPG acapulco blue for my 69 gt500 and a future 69 mach 1. i've got some laquer thinner, and that is what i used last time i sprayed PPG.
99civichic
08-02-2005, 10:09 AM
I used...some brand of reducer, and some brand hardener. All stuff that came with the paint. I felt like a real chemist mixing this stuff!
I just use Duplicolor reducer with nail polish, though. Haven't had a problem yet.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have progress.
Engine:

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/238578c6eng4.JPG
I still have some small detail work and touching up to do.

Pedals
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/238578c6int31-med.JPG
Seats (I took an obvious liberty here with the two-tone, but I think it really helps the seats pop a little more...maybe he just stole 'em out of a Z06!)
Brakes:

Next post will contain some of the reference pictures I used.

As promised days and days ago, I've resized some of the better reference pictures I have for this kit. Here they are!
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/238578C6aeng1.JPG
Front suspension, oil pain, etc. Note how WRONG Revell's oil pan is. It's so wrong, I didn't use it. Not sure what I'm going to do. Unless, for some bizzarre reason, I found the one C6 in existance with an aftermarket oil pan. Who knows, the owner play(ed)s for the Dallas Cowboys.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/238578c6aeng2.JPG
Engine. Yep.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/238578c6aeng4.JPG
Engine, other side. Yep.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/238578c6aeng3.JPG
Undercarraige, exhaust etc.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/238578c6aeng6.JPG
More undercarraige, back to front. Yes it's missing a wheel.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/238578c6aeng5.JPG
Mufflers, rear suspension.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/238578c6aeng7.JPG
Center console. Didn't get many inside pics, the salesman wanted to show us everything, so most of the dash pics are mostly arm with a little dash around it. Silly salesmen.
Hmm, wonder what will get more attention, the model or the reference pics?

Nice work on your model!
Good pics too. I noticed the real car has angle cut exhaust tips and the kit parts are straight cut, but the kit parts still look great.

Since the oil pan is flat and doesn't have any fins or other such obnoxiousness (in the eyes of scale modelers, anyhow), it would be a simple exercise in shaping some styrene. Laminate a couple to a few sheets of styrene sheet that have been cut to rough shape, and smooth it with sanding block, files, and sandpaper. Use a round file to sand out the depresion for the oil filter, and use bits of styrene strip for the sides where there is a distinctive physical composition or structure of something, especially with respect to the size, shape, and arrangment of its parts. Use some small rod for the drain plug, and drill out the indentations where the bolts go and spot some more slices of rod in there (if you feel the need). There you go. Easy peasy, under an hour of work minus drying time.

Despite the remarkable progress from last night, this one won't see completion until the end of August at the soonest. The body will still need a lot of work because of all the trash in the paint, if I don't have to strip it completely. Here's hoping that's not the case; I'd probably just buy another kit and start over on the body. Strangely, the Viper I bought on a whim and had no plans of even starting until late in the year will probably be my one and only completed model from the summer. I know I finished the GSX, but I'd started it two years ago so I don't consider it a summer model!

This paint is a trash magnet. Various parts of this car will be painted black because I am tired of sanding and repainting. This is as good as it gets. If only this paint wasn't so bad about getting crap in it...it's the smoothest paint I've ever laid down, it needs no polish, clear, nothing. *sigh*
