Tranny Swap?

Hi All
According to the build sheet, I have an A-518 tranny. Does anyone know if I can straight swap in a 727, or what I would need to do to enable that swap? The truck is a 1994 Ram 1500 4x4 with a 5.9 (360). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Two things come to mind that could be problematical. The first is that the bolt pattern on the new transmission may not match the one on the current transmission. The second is that I think the 94 auto transmissions are electronically controlled, so the computer may have issues with not receiving that input from the transmission.

that is partially true, as far as the bolt-up, it will bolt up just fine, prior to 1988 when Chrysler started using the A-518, the A-727 used to be bolted up to 360 motors all the time, in fact, the A-518 transmission is nothing more than an A-727 with an overdrive gear. The electronics aspect is somewhat correct. the A-518 still used hydraulic controls, except for lock-up and overdrive. It didn't become mostly electronic until 1996. The PCM would go crazy trying to figure out why it cannot engage overdrive & lock-up thus setting all types of codes, but it can work nonetheless.

It will bolt in.There is one differance, the torque converter. If the transmission came off a 318,no weight on the torque conveter and a 360,a weight on the torque converter. There is a boot around the the crankshaft position sensor.Throw away that boot away. You do not want replace the crankshaft position sensor. Most transmission shops do throw away the boot away. Also check the bottom transmission line towards the radatior. Some idiotic engineer at Daimler Chrysler thought of putting a plastic checkball and it was a big mistake. The plastic checkball melts, plugs the line up and will burn up the transmission.Get rid of that plastic checkball by drilling it out,a spring should come out and blow it out very good after drilling it out.The plastic checkball is white in color.
