Bushing trouble on 95 t-bird

OK, Had the front two tires changed recently and the service guys menitoned that aside from needing an alignment, it would need new bushings on the strut (w/ drivers side the worst). Their price, was $150 aside. Is it really that difficult, and/or necessary? Fairly mech. inclined but not like I have a lift at my disposal. Additionally, am I just going to really screw up the alignment? I have 178K on her and am heading to 200K before thinking of getting a new one.

If you have instructions or recommendations, please elucidate...

Thanks.

im not sure what bushings they are talking about the strut or the strut rod .two different parts altogether. the strut rod is th bar that goes from the lower control arm to the forward frame has bushings at the end take a couple hours on ground to do bushings cost about twenty bucks a side... stru doesnt really have bushings , but has rubber spring pads that causes creaking or popping when worn out definitely a pro's job you need a heavy spring compressor, not normal mcpherson strut compressor i do at my shop for 4hrs labor total for both side strut assemblies, where the strut attaches to the lower control arm there is a bushing that is part of the lower control arm another do it yourself in a couple hrs on ground

I believe what the tech was referring to is the bushing under the tower on top of the strut,, when the strut turns with the steering it rides on a bushing in the top of the tower,,it is held up by 3 bolts threw the tower and you need a spring compressor to change them,,they really arent detramental unless they are making noises when you hit a bump a clunking noise ,,not to be confussed with the upper ball joint that can make the same kinda sounds when they go bad.

On the 89 and up the struts are stationary but they do have a bushing in the top that can make a clunking sound or get loose in either case I have never seen them to be a safety hazard and if you cant tell there bad ( like making some kinda noise) then Coondawg would be correct in assuming that they are trying to rip you off. They would at least be making an annoying squeaking sound.
