Just bought a 1992 Eclipse have some questions

Ok, so I was out shopping around and I pull into this guys lot and sitting there is a 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse in pretty good condition for a '92. So I talk with him, check out the car, everythings in mint condition like it's never been touched. I look inside first thing I notice is the odometer. The thing only has 50k freakin miles on it. I'm like how? It turns out an elderly lady drove it with her dog. It's a 5sp, 2.0L, everything on it is '92 stock. I looked over it and saw 3 main problems: A/C wasn't working, Exhaust system was weak, had some holes before the muffler possibly might need the catalyctic converter replaced, and the rear break plates were rotted. He said he'll fix all those problems and I offered him 2,200 for it. So it's sitting in my driveway and I was wondering what you guys thought I should start out with for mods. I'm off to college in a year so my budget is pretty cheap. I'd like to start with some paint, rims, and go from there. Any ideas??

LoL no but seriously, there is not a whole lot that you can do to it performance wise. We need to know what your goal is with the car before we can tell you what direct to go in. Are you looking for speed, or style? Or a combination of both.

A little of both.

I would say before you do anything with performance or looks, get the thing running really good. Change oil, replace plugs and wires, fuel filter, brakes, etc. Then go something like this....

Performance:
1. CAI (Cold Air Intake)
2. Exhaust (2.25"-2.5")
3. Header

Looks:
This is totally up to you. I would put some nice 17" rims and performance tires on first, then go with a paint job if you can afford it, and a stereo. Just do what looks good to you.

The best place to start is http://www.dsm.org, this is where my research began. www.vfaq.com is excellent site as well. Check the sticky thread on this forum where it say's "Read this before asking questions". Following links on this thread should be more then enough info to swallow.

Before doing any mods (Keep in mind that aftermarket support for the 4g63NA is not all that great), service the vehichle, most importantly the cam timing (Timing belt). Make sure you take your car to a well expierenced mechanic and if he is unfimiliar w/DSM's make sure to show him the timing belt TSB(very easy to find). Trust me, I've seen some very respectable, skilled mechanics loosing their patience when replacing the timing belt. The cam timing on this engine is difficult to work on and most mechanics (Even highly skilled ones) screw it up (One of a few reasons I think DSM's get the reputation of being unreliable).

This engine reponds very well to even the simplest free mod. I'd recommend you locate the air can mod. This will create a deep roar when you open her up, and garuanted to turn heads (Not much performance increase, but worth while). If you don't mind paying for premium fuel, advancing the ignition timing should yield nice results (The more you advance, the higher octane fule you need to prevent knock, only do this if you understand how a ignition system works on a 4-cycle engine. Knock cause's engine damage, do your homework on this one)

In the end do your homework, usually I would ignore a thread like such since there is just so much information about DSM's on the net. But I'm nice and bored right now.
