hi I couldn't find another post so here goes.
I've an 87 t/bar firebird dead v6 4spd.I also have an opp to buy an olds 455.I would like to know has anyone ever done this yet and if so will it fit fairly easy.i know a small blk350 is a simple bolt in but i'd love to have some good old big blk torque too play with. Old school u know.
thanks guys

The Olds is definitely a good torque engine. Installing it in the F-body would be fairly tough. The deck height is such that it might have hood clearance problems. Headers would have to be fabricated. There's no way the stock exhaust manifolds would fit. I doubt you could adapt a set of headers from earlier F-bodies, as they had a bigger engine compartment and only the smaller Olds (403).
Indian Adventures in Foxboro, MA., makes headers, mounts and brackets to put the Pontiac in there, but I know of no one that makes them for the Olds.

It's going to be a very tight fit, I remember how tight it was changing plugs on a trans am with a 350. Yup, custom headers, crossmember, transmission mount, drive shaft, among other things, plus rear end would have to be beefed up to handle the additional power, front springs would have to be changed as well as struts. Some frame rail fabircation might be needed as well, I'm not too sure about that. Hood issues, maybe, depending on what you do for a carb and intake setup, and if you need a spacer for the carb.

A big block in a 3rd gen would be cool, but....
Putting in an Olds 455 would be a nightmare come true!
The amount of money and fabrication it would take would be unreal.:banghead:
Save your money and your sweat. Go with a 350 small block, bore and stroke it to a 383 and have the best of both worlds. Have an engine that will easily fit, with plenty of ponies and gobs of torque. :naughty:
I had an 82 with a 383 stroker, a 4spd and a posi. That thing freakin moved out! Take the cash you would spend on the 455 swap and dump it into a small block. Youll thank your self later, I promise! :bananasmi
