Interview with Jan Magnussen about (among other things) his record lap at NBR.
Hereīs a translation:
[Top pic, Magnussen and Vette:]
Thursday morning, Southern Germany. General Motors have discreetly rented the legendary german Nürburgring track for an hour between 7 and 8 in the morning.
The temperature is more comfortable than at Le Mans, and the track is empty apart from a couple of early rising spy photographers.
It takes more than a blue Vette to exite them - they recognize it, itīs the Z06 version, the brutal Vette with 500 BHP. What they do not know, is that itīs Jan Magnussen behind the wheel.
The objective is to beat Walther Rörhlīs laptime in a Porsce GT3 RS - itīs 7:43,0 min for the 20,8 km heavily varied track with 73 corners.
The record was set in 2004 in a standard version of the Porsche.
[Splash in middle]
Jan made 7:42,9 thereby beating the Porsche GT3 RS by 0,1 sec.
[Two lower photos]
"The photo is taken at Flugplatz. Iīm going 240-250 km/h at full throttle in 4th gear and the car is actually jumping twice: After the first jump it lands so hard that it takes off again, as you can see in the second picture. As it lands the second time I have to take a sharp right immediately after.
The car is a standard car with street setup - had it been my racer it would hardly have left the tarmac. At NBR the street car reaches 295 km/h on the long straight in 5th gear (6th gear is an overgear for saving gasoline). At NBR there are no run-off areas like other tracks,. You simply have to stay on the track. When you are halfway around the 20 km, you think itīs a good thing there are only half as many places left you risk running off the track" Jan says.
[About the track and the car]
"The stree Corbette has virtually no grip compared to my race car which has a large rear spoiler. But it does have almost as many BHPs as my Le Mans racer and is almost as fast. The rev limiter sets in at 7000 rpms, and it does have more than 500 BHPs.
Itīs fast.At the record attempt I drove 2 x 2 laps with a cooldown lap inbetween for both mine and the carīs sake.
I couldnīt have driven one single lap more. I wouldnīt have liked to drive a single meter (3 feet) more with myself at the wheel at that speed", Jan finishes.

Chalk another one up for GM, that Z06 is f****** awesome. Imagine if a camaro had a "slighty" detuned version of that motor... orgasim...

sexy sexy, oh and the rear wing thing was in relation to the race car that develops damn near enough downforce at speed to stick to the roof of a tunnel if it wanted to. personally i have no problem with how porsches look, to me its how they sound. the flat six just sounds bad, and not in the good way.

Is that the track that is on Gran Turismo 4? If it is, GOOD god. That track is crazy, all the turns, high speeds you can reach then a damn HAIRPIN turn that you must make, is really freaking hard to do. all this while having elevation changes makes it even more difficult, damn I want to race on that track again. :lol2:

yup, that track sets the standard for performance cars. thats also the track that they used to tune the suspension on both the caddilac CTS-V and the Cobalt SS.

Just so you know 195 km/h is like 183 mph.

That ZO6 is awesome and those pictures of it getting air are damn awesome.
I have no problem with Porshes but they are overpriced. I guess you get what you pay for because it is a German car but you can get better for less in the performance area.
As for the looks I think the Porshe 911 looked its best in the early '90's.

Pretty interesting, I thought Chevy had its own track that it did that on? I remember reading something.. maybe it was only for the regular C6..

chevy does have its own test course, but like i said the nurburgring track is the standard so they used that for the performance models.

Groups like BMW and Mercedes have used the Nordschelife for years and it is the mecca of road courses (at least in the sim community I'm in). Some high end tuners from Japan (Blitz especially) go there and test out their cars as well.
This move is really helping out with the development of sport suspensions in with a good comfortable ride as the Nordschleife isn't exactly smooth.
You guys need to see the video of the guy in the Yellow Bird RUF Porsche. He's doing a test run on the Nordschleife and you won't beleive how much he can get the ass end of that car out. Talk about insane...

and you need about 200mph before the driving upside-down to come int oeffect (assuming you have enough downforce etc)

I saw somewhere that you could drive an indy flat out upside down, I think it was the Discovery Channel.....
So, to test, you steal yourself an Indy car.... get a 8 mile long tunnel with like a 1000 foot diamiter and you should be able to drive upside down.... lol.
Hell, I'd do it.....

Yeah, right. I wish.
Said to be $75K or so.
Less than half the price of the Ford GT, and basicly the same performance. Plus, it just looks better. :icon16:

Looks way better than the Ford GT. Also, it's in the 200mph club too, right? Man, i would love to be able to see this thing in action. Is this chevy's 1st super car (like ford GT, dodge viper, etc.) or has the covette always been consider a super car?

I dont think the motor costs that much....which I think is what link was talking about. That would be a cool swap though. An ls7 in a firebird...lay the smack down with that thing. Especially if you up the displacement....but that would just get crazy expensive.

The ls7 is still a push rod based engine right? Is it all aluminum everything? Whats the bore and stroke on that damn thing?
Mr. Luos

All aluminum.
Bore = 4.125
Stroke = 4.000
Titanium rods
11:1 compression
70cc CNC'd heads
2.2 titanium intake valves
1.61 sodium filled exhaust valves
Rocker arms = 1.8

The titanium i believe is for the strength and how light it is....If i remember right it to help the moving mass of the pushrod assembly stay down so it can hit that 7k redline easier
