OK, after 3 garages, no one can figure out why my 95 Blazer wont start. Its got a V6 Vortec engine. Sometimes it will start and it runs great when it does, but most of the time it wont start at all. I have had the following done so far... new fuel pump, fuel filter, plug wires (they were arching) clutch fan and radiator flushed (it was running very hot with the air on, this fixed that problem). They checked the crank shaft sensor also. It turns over great, just wont start. I dont know what else to have them try. they said the catalytic convertor was ok too. I am open for any suggestions. mechanics at work said to try sea foam??? Anyone heard of that? I appreciate any help you can give me....Thanks

Did they check fuel pressure?
Did they inspect your CPI injector?
Did they inspect your nut kit?

I've noticed that our Blazers share a common, and frequent problem: leaky fuel pressure regulators. The FPR is a device that lowers the pressure of fuel directed at it by the fuel pump, and sends it through the CPI spider in to your fuel injectors. The original "spider" unit as it's called was defective, and has since been factory redesigned. I had a good deal of trouble finding a replacement fuel pressure regulator and ended up buying a completely new cpi (actually I bought a kit that included the inlet and return lines, gaskets, and o rings to do a full overhaul).
You can refer to this thread for details and pictures:

Basically, you'll need to pull your upper intake plenum off to diagnose your problem. It's an easy job if you have a Haynes manual.

They said the fuel pressure should be 55 but it was 52. They said they are going to check the computer next. I am getting very frustrated :disappoin

That fuel pressure reading is a bit on the low side. With key in the run/on position but not starting the engine, it should read in the neighborhood of 60-62 PSI for a CPI Blazer Vortec. FIrst thing I would check though would be if the battery is completely charged. A low battery from multiple start attempts can cause weak fuel pressure readings. Make sure too that you are getting a spark from the coil. So, slow-charge that battery overnight at 2 amps and try to get it to fire over, or use a booster battery and cables, check for spark, and see if that helps. If fuel pressure it still too low and you have a spark, I would pull the upper intake to inspect for the regulator, injector, or fuel line leaking before you go and pick up a fuel pump. If it's leaking/spraying gas when you do a key on, no engine start, you found the problem. If it's not leaking, then I would suspect a fuel pump.

We already put 2 new fuel pumps on it. Thought we had a bad one and exchanged it. I just got back from the garage. he said he got mad and hit the computer and it started right up hehee so he found a used one for $37.50 hes going to try tomorrow. I really appreciate all the suggestions, you all are great !!! I am pasting them all on a notepad and asking him about them. So far he said hes tried all but the last post and everything checks out. He said it runs like a new one once it finally starts. I'll let y'all know if the computer replacement works........

It isn't the computer, your CPI injector and nut kit are leaking.

Percussive maintenance only works on computer hard drives. :) Yes, If I were you KYCowgirl, I would seek help from another shop. I am lucky in that there is a local ACE AC-Delco garage that's pretty reasonable on prices and has up to date certification for all of their mechanics. I suggest that you look for the same if you can and have them go through a list of checks that we have all mentioned. Regardless if you changed your fuel pump, was it changed with an origional AC-Delco part? Aftermarket pumps do not last very long in the high pressure environment needed to run a CPI system. You may have to yank one from a low mileage wreck, or pony up the bucks at the dealership to get the right part.

You better not be paying for him to replace the ECM after he hit it.
If he is trying to do so, I suggest you bring a friend along for backup and not put up with it.

This last one is in Ohio. The computer thing didnt work either so I am making an appt. at the Chevy dealer in town to check it on their computer. Oh he said he didnt really "hit" the computer, just tapped it. Will let y'all know what happens next and again I appreciate all the advice...........

Do a search for CPI injector here in the Blazer Section, you will get some more information.
Here is my experience with it.:

ok, I'm dyin here :eek7: The shop called back and said the distributor "WAS" bad, but once they test drove it , it quit again when it got hot, and they said the spider injectors are bad and its going to cost an additional $726.00 to fix those on top of the $267.00 for the distributor. Does this sound right or am I getting soaked????

Nope, that's about right for the stealership pricing... 200~500% markup on everything. :) But hey, you said it yourself - your local shade tree mechanics all drag knuckles like some arborial species of simmian. So this may indeed be your only safe bet to getting the job done right, and with a warranty. The price you pay for *hopefully* competent aid.

Remember those old AAMCO commercials with 3 or 4 monkies around a transmission, beating on it with whiffle-ball bats? For some reason that came to mind when you mentioned how "Good" your mechanical support was in your neck of the woods. :D I guess we all have shops/experiences like that at some point. Mine was some quack trying to sell me a $300 engine part when a $2 spark plug wire fixed the problem. :disappoin

Oooooooo K....got the blazer back today with a new distributor and spider injectors ($647.22) and I asked if they drove the heck out of it and made sure it was fixed and they said yes. On the way home, I went to turn onto my road and applied the brakes and it stalled. Everytime I slow down it tries to die, then revs back up. I am soooooooooo frustrated :banghead: !!!!!!!!!! We had it towed back to the chevy dealer and they called this morning and said the computer was bad. The original and the one I got from a salvage yard and it needed anew one. I told them to go ahead and fix it which they did for another $431.23. We picked it up, drove home 6 miles, turned it off, and then tried to start it again and NOTHING !!!!!!! Iys doing exactly what it did to start with !!!!!! I am soooooo PO'd. If its not the distributor, the spider injectors, the fuel pump which have all been replaced, what else could it be???????

Got the Blazer back again Yesterday. They put a new ignition switch in it. They gave me a Lumina to drive while they were working on it this time. Shoulda gave me a loaner all along. They did not charge me this time. My son went to drive it to work this morning and guess what ???? It wont start !!!! So the tow truck just left for the 4th time. I am going to file a complaint with the BBB, and demand all my money back for all the unnecessary work they did. They tried to tell me that even though it didnt fix the problem, all that other stuff WAS bad and needed replaced, so I am sure it is a losing battle trying to get my money back. I should have stopped payment on the check.

Talk to the manager and talk to the dealer owner and then talk to GM's headquarters.
Rattle the HELL outa their chain.

Check to see if there is spark when this happens.
Also, check to see if you hear the fuel pump when it dies. Turn the key to the on position and listen for the pump whine.

I wonder if it is just mismatched spark plug wires. Usually the engine would not start at all, but I guess you could get lucky with six sparks per cycle that one might eventually start the engine. Then it would run like crap if at all depending on which wires and how may wires were criss crossed.
I do not know. Just throwing that out there for the Real Blazer Experts (i.e. not me). See what everyone else says.

Welllllllllll the shop called and told me that when the mechanic put the distributor on he accidentally pinched a wire going from the wire harness to the distributor and that was the problem which they were going to take care of since it was their fault. I went to get it today and they had a different story, that the other distributor was a bad one and they replaced it again. (No mention of the pinched wire again) I asked how much of my money they were giving back since they did all that work after that was done and it didnt need it. They said the injectors WERE leaking and needed replaced but they would refund the money for other things it didnt need. She wouldnt say exactly how much, just that I had to talk to the manager tomorrow. They said it is running good right now but they want to keep it one more night and drive it home to be sure. He also said it is running hot in a short distance of driving which we knew it was doing that and had the radiator flushed about a month ago. Guess it didnt help. Any suggestions on the overheating? I had to have the heater core replaced last year because it had that orange junk in it and it corroded it and it was leaking but now it has the green anti-freeze. I know I am being a pain in the butt, but I really do appreciate all your advice :)

Replace the rad cap with something that is NOT AC Delco.
Use a stant.
Also, you didn't authorize them to replace your injectors, it wasn't causing the problem so they didn't need to replace it or any of the other extra stuff.
Get as much money back as possible. Don't back down and don't feel sorry for them. They will whine as to them having to pay their mechanics and such, just say you don't care, I came here for a good job, not a 2 week screw around. Hell, you are the dealer and should know better.

Just giving my two cents here,
I've had this problem (it may not be the same solution as yours)
I was losign coolant from my resevior, when the collant was low, it spiked in heat, turned on the heater and it went down, fill it with coolant and it was okay for a few days, then it would spike again when there wasn't enough coolant.
I had a crack in my rad, got it changed, and it works perfectly now.
Just puttin in my spill.

Took my Blazer in for a few simple fixes, and a check on the computer, ended up with a new front end and windshild, including a new roof from Midas. (the new roof, windshield, hood, sid panels and few other things were free, but still without my vehicle for over a week)
