okokok... Ima hafta pay another friggin mechanic.
I trust this guy because I'm sort related to him via marriage (I can't stand my that uncle that his sister is married too but that's a different issue) BUT he IS expensive compared to most guys. Does good work and stands by it, but expensive.
My trans needs rebuilt, and I think, to save $ on a T5 or T56 I'm just going to have the rear switched from a 4.11 to 3.55.
Any idea what an M22 costs to have rebuilt, and what it costs to have the ring and pinion switched out???

"Damn it Jim, I'm a doctor not a mechanic!"
-Deforrest Kelly
Jim, I have no f'n clue what that relation thing was all about, but:
Honestly, a manual trans isn't all that had to work on. But atleast you could cut half the cost by removing it, taking it to the shop and then installing it. A trans jack or a 3 ton floor jack (due to the nice sized dish) are needed. You could do it yourself with some cussin and moaning, or with a set of extra hands with half the cussing and moaning, but another liver to consum the beer.
As for the rear, same ordeal.
You can doooo et.

LOL - I knew if I said I was related to this guy by marriage you guys would start asking when I married him.
Hey Wright... I'm not against trying this myself, and at 80 pounds (or so I've been told) I think I can handle the trans by myself, but I was under the impression that I would need so many specialty tools that I'd be better off paying somone to do it. I was also to that the ring and pinion is a huge pain in the ass too.. screw it up and ruin both.
If that ain't so, especially the trans part, I very well may try this myself... I've gotta bust my cherry sometime, right? But I am getting some false confidence here or is this really something that is not that hard?
Trans mechanic said "drive it home, straight home, and don't drive it again until you get the trans rebuilt. So I'm concerned, and assuming he's loading up on viagra for the screwing I'm gonna get if I take it to him.

Well, here's what I'd say.
The trans may look small, but it's a heavy sob when you've been wresteling it around trying to manuever it around laying under the car, hence use the jack, your forearms will thank you kindly.
My prior point i was trying to make, you can atleast remove the trans and axle. It's just nuts and bolts my friend. And a little attention to detail.
As for rebuilding them yourself. You'd have to rate yourself, I'd find a manual or something, analyze each step and ask youself if you can handle it. Nothing really in the way of "specialty" tools there.
Now, the diff. That's were you are going have to precise. And yes setting the pinion crush bearing is a biatch and a half on your rookie attempt. Plus, you'll have bearing side load measurements and ring gear backlash. All of which, you will need a dial indicator and feeler guage to say the least.
Again man, find some litereature somewhere and study up, and if you don't feel like it's for you, atleast you'll have a better understanding of how it all works together. But I have every bit of faith you could handle the dis/reassembly of it.

setting up the rear end is doable, but its hard, and youd be better off paying someone to do it if you dont have someone looking over your shoulder to help. also there is one tool you have to have and thats a hydrolic press to get the pinion bearing on.
as far as the tranny, a manual tranny shouldnt be that hard, if it was an automatic i would say pay someone to do it. but with a manual you just need to be very methodical, take your time, lay out everything in the same way you removed it so you can put it back the right way. and have a manual there to walk you through it.
on a personal note, i never do business with family, especialy cars. my uncle is a drag racer, boat racer, and owns his own shop, but hes not ever allowed to spin a wrench on my camaros. alot of history and bad blood because of things hes done to family cars because he thought it was a better idea. just somethin to think about.

I think I'm gonna try the trans myself, and if I can't find anyone to help on the rear I'll pay a mechanaprick to do it.

I'll do it for a T5 (not one of the junk ones either), a set of windshield wiper hoses, a rebuild on the 454, a set of trunk springs, a vacuum boost for power brakes, a power brake booster, a new rear end with 3.55's and disc brakes, and a new sound system.
Think that's reasonable???

Yeah, but un-friggin-fortunately I wasn't aware of them. The body and interior are in great shape and that was my main concern. The oil leaks (rings and gaskets) and x-mission problems didn't rear their ugly damned heads until about 3 months after I got it home. Radio just flat out sucks, I knew that and planned on replacing it, but... I'm embarrassed to say I listen to alot of talk radio and don't really care anymore. When I do listen to the radio it's just a bunch of posers trying to play heavy... ain't nothing like honest to goodness heavy metal (or Frank.. If you don't like Frank you are a complete waste... Bonus: Frank always gets you laid too!) : Overkill, Testament, Slayer, Death Angel, O9MM, etc. Screw Metallica they're too much like Elton John. Anyway.. why should I spent $450 to hear some moron talk better, and I love the sound my maro makes when you get on it. So... I was thinking of replacing the adi with gauges, etc but haven't made up my mind. And I gotta get the engine and x-mission fixed first. (like how I got that back on topic!! That was real slick wasn't it? Damn I'm good.)
Back off topic.. no one happens to have a "Hallow's Eve" CD (I think they only had one) than they could burn me a copy of do they... I'll give you $20 for it.
