New Exaust system parts

HI evryone i'm back brought my car back after a brief stint with a rl acura which i say has more problems then my intirgue thank god for hondas warranty. but i sold to the dude who brought my intrigue for the rest of the price i owed and my intrigue back. but i dont think he took care of the car because it sounds like my cat converter has a hole in it or is no good on the inside . to make along story short has anyone replaced from thier cat conv to muffler parts and how much did cost, i know a direct fit cat convert is about 200 at autozone but i cant find the rest of the system and gm wants way to much for some exaust pipes. i can have the stuff put on for free if i can find all the parts , thanks , also any web sites would help just let u know i tried the most common ones (JC,Partstrain,gmpart diret, 3800 perfor, rock auto,)

go to your state and find an local outlet, then do the parts search.

Shipping is OK also because they will ship freight to one of their local outlets. So to ship a tranny may be $40-$50, but then you got to pick it up.


Better put that car on a lift or jacks and find out where the sound is coming from before you buy anything. Don't waste anymore money than you have to. The Intrigue exhaust is pretty good stock in my opinion.

You can always wait for the parts to show up on Ebay also.

Has anybody had to change there resonator because thats where my holes are at, i went to mineke to get a est. he said that the resonator , muffler pipe and muffler was all connected as one unit so i would have to go to the dealer, he also said that it cost alot money for the part, i patched the holes for know but how long is this gonna last. since this is one unit do u guys think its worth trying the junk yards. any suggestions are well welcomed thanks.

I had Midas replace my resonator for around $250. They cut out the old one and put in a smaller tube like mini-muffler. My old one rusted out from road salt in Western NY. Works good so far, it has been 5 months.

if its the resonator the easiest way to fix it would be to replace it with a glasspack, it will probably be a little louder but shouldnt be too bad.

your average resonator can run anywhere from about 30-60 bucks, plus installation, but it should take an experience exhaust guy much more than 15-20 minutes to do it, all it would be is saw off the old one and put in the new, just try and find a glasspack with similar dimensions to the old one.

as for the cat, i have done a high flow cat and u-bend delete, i ordered a high flow cat from ebay, its a small round unit and it cost about 45 bucks...i can find it for you if necessary.

My father's '98 Intrigue is now making a bit of noise, the cat's going out on it.

He would kind of like to put bigger exhaust on altogether, from as far forward as possible. Is a 2.5" exhaust too big for this engine (3.8L, not 3.5L), or will it work just fine? The current exhaust is 2.26" OD as measured by my cheapie digital vernier, so 2.25" stuff should fit no problem. I was just wondering if anyone had gone the route of a larger exhaust and suffered from lack of low-end torque, or if the bigger exhaust actually helps.

I'd be welding up a Carsound (made by magnaflow) universal cat, getting rid of that hump-pipe by putting the O2 sensor bung sideways instead of vertical, and putting at least one magnaflow muffler in the rear position, possibly a second in front of the rear crossmember to act as a resonator. I'd probably also be doing some sort of intake work as well, just to keep the engine balanced.

Does that sound like a good idea, or should I stick to 2.25" piping?
