: I have an 86 Bronco ll, 5 speed, 4wd that I have replaced both the starter ring and several starters. Upon replacing starters they run fine for about 2 days and then the grinding starts again, this will last untill the only sound left is the bendix engaging. Please HELP!!!!

So the bendix works fine and keeps trying to start. Sounds to me like the Solenoids are going bad. The Solenoids are the littler circular things attached to the starter. First thing I would do is check the Solenoid to see if it is actually bad. There are a few ways to do this, with the help of someone take jumper cables and attach them to the solenoid with power to power and ground to ground. If the solenoid engages then you must have a electrical problem somewhere. Hope this can be helpful

Are you sure that the starter ring was replaced properly? Are the pinion gears on your starters stripped on the end only? I'm not sure if a wiring problem would prevent the pinion gear from engaging fully or partially. I would suspect either it works or doesn't. The only other thing is did this problem only start after changing your starter ring on the fly wheel?

My mistake, I remember when some lady ran me off the road and I ran over a big rock during winter. Needless to say the front end of my talon was done even though it didn't look like it. After that my the tip of my starter would stay engaged until halfway through 1st and it would make a little bit of a grinding sound. But you never know...
