For a novice, i wouldn't try doing it yourself. I am confident i could do them myself, but i think i would still leave that up to a professional. Getting all the needles to go in the same direction is a pain in the ass i hear.

When I had my old guages with the overlay on them I couldn't get the gas guage to read correctly.

You can't remove the needles if you wanted to. You have to move the needles and slide the new overlay over them...then move them back and pray that they are right. Or you can take it to gm and have them recalibrate it after you put the new overlay in, but that can get pricey.
